Whilst the body was clothed in an extraordinary design by Leonardo Fioravanti of Pininfarina, the 365 GTB/4 would prove to be the last of a line of two seat front-engined V-12 Ferraris with a lineage going back to the beginning of the company.Fioravantiâs design was a remarkable departure from soft undulating lines of earlier Ferraris. Whilst producing something to counter Lamborghiniâs futuristic Miura, the 365 GTB/4âs design tread the fine line between staying true to Ferrariâs design ethos and breaking convention with something truly original. Today, the Pininfarina body is unmistakeably Ferrari and belies its true age of 55 years.Despite looking quite unlike its predecessor, the 365 GTB/4 was directly developed from the 275 GTB/4. Two prototypes left the factory showing the evolution between the two models but underneath the skin was a similar chassis. Despite the engine increasing in capacity by over a litre, the quad-cam timing, six twin-choke Weber carburettors and dry-sump lubrication remained, all features derived from Ferrariâs dominant success at the race circuit. The 275âs outstanding weight distribution remained with the continued use of the transaxle.When the 365 GTB/4 was launched it was one of the most powerful cars ever produced, designed to easily cross continents at outrageous speeds. This was typified by Dan Gurney and Brock Yates claiming the first Cannonball Run victory in a 365 GTB/4, charging from New York City to Los Angeles in just under 36 hours. Away from illegal road racing, the 365 GTB/4 was developed by Ferrari for Group IV GT racing. Results were tremendous, as the race-prepared berlinettas captured 4th overall at the 1971 Tour de France, 5th overall and 1st in class at the 1972 24 Hours of Le Mans, 1st and 2nd overall in the 1972 Tour de France, two further class wins at Le Mans in 1973 and 1974, and at the 24 Hours of Daytona a 2nd overall and class win in the 1973 running and a further class win there in 1975. So potent was the Daytona Competizione that one even achieved 2nd overall at the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1979, over a decade after the model was introduced. This extraordinary race record secured the 365 GTB/4âs reputation amongst the greatest GT competition cars ever to compete on track, reminding the motorsport world of Ferrariâs dominance in endurance racing with the 250 SWB, 250 GTO, and 250 LM.This 365 GTB/4, chassis number 16331, is one of only 158 Daytonas produced in RHD. Delivered in February 1973 the car was originally ordered by Mr. Heryet through Maranello Concessionaires but he cancelled his order, so the Daytona went to its first owner the Honorable John Dawnay, known by his title as Viscount Downe. Dawnay was a fascinating character who entered cars like Aston Martin DP214, Nimrod, a Ferrari 250 GTO and Ford GT40 into major sportscar races. This 365 GTB/4 was ordered in the stunning colour combination of Argento Auteuil over a Nuvola leather interior, with several desirable options including Cromodora wheels, a bumper bar and air conditioning. Shortly after registering the car, Dawnay sold this Daytona through Maranello Concessionairs to Sir Raymond Johnstone CBE, a well-known Scottish businessman. Johnstone kept his Daytona until 1980 when it passed into the hands of another well-known car enthusiast, David Lomas. During Lomasâ ownership, this Daytona shared garage space with a 250 SWB, 275 GTB/4, a Jaguar C-type and D-type, and an Aston Martin DB4GT. Such was Lomasâ care for this Daytona that he kept a logbook of every journey, mileage and notes. Along with the logbook is a significant amount of invoices from workshops such as Graypaul and DK Engineering, whilst the outstanding bare metal respray by RS Panels carried out in 1993 is fully documented as well. Lomas passed away in 1998 and his last note in the logbook clearly shows how much he enjoyed this Ferrari, âBack at Moss Cottage, car perfect.â.This Daytona formed part of a private collection until 2007 and it only covered 900 miles during this ownership. Between 2007 and 2010 it was owned by Gareth Richardson before passing to Ian Tandy and then Chris Evans before moving into the ownership of Neil Ewin. Between 2011 and 2017 it was maintained by Italia Autosport of West Yorkshire, with prior invoices from SMDG Performance Cars and DK Engineering.Since 2017, this 365 GTB/4 has been part of a significant collection and is offered with its original books and pouch, along with an original jack roll. This Ferrari would be attractive enough simply for its stunning colour combination, but further to this it is accompanied by a remarkable history file, detailing its excellent provenance from new. Ferrari announced the 365 GTB/4 Berlinetta in 1968, introducing the companyâs first 4.4-liter dual-overhead-cam engine in a road car. Clothed in Leonardo Fioravantiâs revolutionary shark-nose coachwork, the model was actually a stopgap effort that surprised everyone with its sheer success while a forthcoming rear-engine flat-12 model remained in development. It would be the last of Ferrariâs great front-engine grand touring machines for over 20 years, an exclamatory statement of power and style that capped a legendary tradition.With a staggering output of 352 horsepower, the 365 GTB/4 dethroned the Lamborghini Miura as the worldâs fastest production car. As a direct development of the 275 GTB/4, it utilized dry-sump lubrication that enabled a lower placement of the engine, a five-speed transaxle that provided ideal 50/50 weight distribution, and all-wheel independent suspension. As a result of this competition derived mechanical design, the Daytona offered crisp handling characteristics at speed. Wide wheels with superior tire contact and four-wheel disc brakes rounded out a superb all-around package that eventually proved just how potent it was with three class victories at Le Mans and several years of dominance in Group 4 GT racing.That the model was nicknamed âDaytonaâ in honor of the companyâs dominating 1-2-3 finish at the 1967 24 Hours of Daytona has become a point of legend, even if the name was not officially sanctioned by Enzo Ferrari. At the 1969 Frankfurt Motor Show, Maranello introduced a striking open variant that revealed how handsome the coachwork became when the roof was removed. Endowed with a purity of line and stance, the new spiderâs collectability was assured when only 121 examples were produced. As the final front-engine open Ferrari to feature a derivation of Gioacchino Colomboâs classic short-block V-12, the Daytona Spider was the ultimate evolution of nearly 20 years of development, and the final hereditary successor of a generation of vintage Ferraris.CHASSIS NUMBER 15417In addition to its inherent rarity, this fine Ferrari claims certification by Ferrari Classiche as well as exhibition at some of the nicheâs most discerning events, resulting in a particularly desirable example of the celebrated open Daytona. According to the research of marque expert Marcel Massini, chassis number 15417 is the 49th Daytona Spider built, and the car is one of just two examples finished in the handsome color combination of Nero paint over a Beige Scuro leather interior.Specified for distribution to the United States with instruments in miles, the Ferrari was factory-equipped with air conditioning, a Voxson Sonar radio with electric antenna, and a tonneau cover. The 365 completed factory assembly in April 1972, and six months later the spider was invoiced to Luigi Chinetti Motors and airfreighted from Rome to New York City. Though the Daytona was originally ordered by Dr. Calvin Stevens, the founder of a Florida-based chemical company called Ash Stevens Inc, the car was ultimately sold new in March 1973 to William Whitelaw, Jr. of Dublin, Ohio. Mr. Whitelaw did not retain possession for long, however, as within a year the spider passed to Robert Smith of Hinsdale, Illinois.While the Ferrariâs history over the following 17 years is currently unknown, it is fair to speculate about the potentially excessive lifestyle of the carâs caretaker, as the spider was apparently impounded by the US Drug Enforcement Agency in December 1991. A year later 15417 was offered by Florida resident Sam Richter, and in 1995 the Daytona was sold to Jeffrey Schwartz of Tenafly, New Jersey. Mr. Schwartz opted to conduct a full restoration, and from 1998 through early 2000 the spider was comprehensively refurbished by Frank Triarsiâs esteemed Classic Coach Repair in Elizabethtown, New Jersey. This work included refinishing the exterior in the proper shade of Nero, while the interior was re-trimmed with tobacco leather. Shortly thereafter the Ferrari was acquired by a Florida-based collector who went on to keep the car for a respectable period of 12 years. This owner sought to optimally preserve the restoration to the greatest possible degree, and consequently he reportedly drove the Daytona only about 150 total miles during his dozen years as caretaker, while consistently treating the car to annual service by marque specialists. In 2011 the spider was submitted to Ferrari Classiche for certification, and a Red Book was issued.In March 2012 the beautiful Ferrari was offered at RM Auctionsâ Amelia Island sale, and it was purchased there by a collector from New Canaan, Connecticut, who went on to proudly present the car at the Cavallino Classic in January 2013, winning a Platinum Award. The Daytona was again offered at RMâs Amelia Island event two years later, and it was then sold to collector David Moores of Liverpool, England, whose estate is currently offering the car. During Mr. Mooresâ ownership, the interior was reupholstered in the proper shade of Beige Scuro, and the owner presented the spider at the ultra-exclusive Salon PrivÃ© Concours dâElegance at Blenheim Palace in September 2018. It is worth noting that Daytona Spiders provide a substantially different driving experience than their closed berlinetta brethren. With the top lowered, drivers can not only enjoy the brisk elemental rush of wind and ambient environment, but they are furthermore treated to an unimpeded chorus of the roaring V-12âs symphonic performance. This well-restored example, finished in a rare and highly desirable color combination, offers both roadgoing enjoyment and the potential for further concours display, enriching the innate rarity characterized by this very special Prancing Horse. The 1971 24 Hours of Le Mans marked the end of an era. It was the last time the legendary 5-litre big bangers would do battle at the Circuit de la Sarthe and no fewer than nine Ferrari 512s lined up against seven Porsche 917s. The German marque came out on top with 917s finishing 1st and 2nd, while the 512s had to settle for 3rd and 4th. Following them home in an outstanding 5th position overall was this very special Ferrari 365 GTB/4 âDaytonaâ Competizione.This hugely significant piece of Ferrari history was built on 28 April 1969 as a steel-bodied roadgoing model, and was only the third production Daytona ever made. Fascinatingly, it never left the factory, and was retained by Maranello as a development prototype, serving as a test bed for, among other developments, a new type of wiper system. The machineâs early history only got more interesting when, on 26 April 1971, after two years in Ferrariâs ownership, Luigi Chinettiâs fabled North American Racing Team instructed the factory to convert chassis 12467 to competition specification. Chinettiâs target: the 1971 24 Hours of Le Mans. The work was carried out under the auspices of the factory by Piero Drogoâs Carrozzeria Sport Car with help from Autofficina Sport. Although the steel body was retained, the modified shell featured a quick-release fuel filler cap in the boot lid, a Dino 206 SP-style fuel capacitor, a 512M fuel pressure gauge, Plexiglass side windows, a front spoiler, and flared wheel arches to accommodate enormous nine-inch rear and eight-inch front wheels. A roaring side-exit exhaust, roll cage, and a 512M-type fire extinguisher system completed the package. Ferrari delivered chassis 12467 directly to Le Mansâas per invoice number 378/71, dated 7 June 1971âwhere it was piloted by Bob Grossman and Luigi Chinetti Jr. The carâs promise was immediate in practice, with a thundering pace along the Mulsanne Straight impressing âCocoâ Chinetti. Chinetti took the opening stint in the French classic before handing over to Grossman as night fell. Chassis 12467 ran like clockwork, slowly climbing the rankings as the more fragile sports prototypes fell by the wayside; by the 19th hour it had risen to a remarkable 5th overall. There it stayed, having set a best lap that was seven seconds faster than it had managed during practice and winning the Index of Thermal Efficiency. Such was the significance of the result that Chinetti received a congratulatory telegram at the end of the race from none other than Enzo Ferrari. NART then took chassis 12467 back to the USA and in November it was sold via Grossman to Clive Baker, who ran the Baker Motors-Ring Free Oil race team. In early 1972 it began its life in the GT 2.5+ categoryâeffectively Group IV GTâand was entered for the Daytona Six Hours, where it finished 3rd in class, and the 12 Hours of Sebring, where regulations demanded that glass side windows be fitted. Later that year it also raced at Watkins Glen and Road Atlanta before being sold to Harley Cluxton III. In June of 1973 the Ferrari was sold to Herb Wetanson, and it remained in the USA for more than 40 years before returning to Europe. In 2022, the current owner decided to restore the car to full Le Mans 1971 specification. The Daytona was sent to Italy and entrusted to Corrado Patellaâs Autofficina Omega and Dino Cognolatoâs Carrozzeria Nova Rinascente, with the restoration being managed by Ferrari Classiche. The process reunited the original engine block with its original cylinder heads, complete with Le Mans scrutineering stamps from 1971. Further, while down to bare metal, previously hidden mounting points were found for an additional radio antenna and wiper system that were fitted between 1969 and 1971 when the car was being used for development by Ferrari. The Daytona is currently undergoing inspection for Ferrariâs coveted Red Book Classiche certification. This machine holds a special place in Ferrari history as the first factory-prepared prototype and genesis of the Daytona Competizione. The model would go on to score victories and class wins everywhere from the Tour de France to the 24 Hours of Daytona, finishing 2nd at the Florida circuit in 1979âa full decade after its launch.
