You may have heard that Aspen, Colorado is a winter playground for A-listers and international jet-setters, but that does not mean this small town is only for the rich and the famous.
"People have a misconception about Aspen because the media has portrayed it as glitz and glamour," says Craig Morris, co-owner of Morris & Frywald Sotheby's Realty in Aspen. "But actually, Aspen is an ideal place to live for anyone because this city is small-town living with big-town amenities."
And he's right - although Aspen has a population of only about 5,000 residents, the city has four world-renowned mountains that residents can enjoy year-round by skiing, snowboarding, hiking or biking. Residents and visitors have the opportunity to attend music, art, and food and wine festivals throughout the year, and fine dining and high-end shopping is a mainstay of the community.
Another thing year-round residents can enjoy is the incredible weather. "From June through September, our highs are in the 70s and 80s, but there's virtually no humidity at all," says Craig. "And our winters are great too - most winter days are sunny, and you can find residents in a short-sleeve shirt or light sweater enjoying the outdoors."
Of the abundance of activities in Aspen, Craig says that the active, outdoor lifestyle is extremely important to most, if not all, residents of Aspen - in fact, the Wall Street Journal recently reported that Colorado has the lowest obesity rate of the United States. Mix the active lifestyle with great schools for students of all ages, an excellent transportation system, and low crime rates, and Aspen becomes a perfect city for anyone, especially families, to live in.
Craig notes that anyone looking for an exceptional quality of life should consider Aspen. "One of the sayings in Aspen is, 'I came here for the winter, but stayed for the summer,'" Craig says. "The quality of life in Aspen is unbelievable."
