Waterfront Living on Kent Island, Maryland

In one of the most densely populated areas of the country, right in the heart of northeastern Maryland, sits a lush sanctuary that captures the romance of resort-style waterfront living. It's known as Kent Island, a short drive from Washington D.C. and Baltimore, and just across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge from quaint, historic Annapolis.

There's something about that bridge. Long & Foster Real Estate agent Michele Sinclair, who lives on Kent Island, describes it thusly: "I've heard this statement over and over: 'A change comes over me when I cross that bridge. I breather easier. I know I'm home.'"

In many cases, home on Kent Island means a luxurious enclave with pool, dock and often a private sandy beach. And so it is with one of the jewels in Michele's portfolio: a gated waterfront estate on 2.6 acres on the island's northwest side. The home, in Stevensville, sits on the vast shores of Chesapeake Bay, "just about everything revolves around the water," Michele says. For Kent Island residents, it's just a short boat ride for a four-star dinner at exclusive St. Michaels, home to Cheney and other prominent politicians, and even a few movie stars.

Kent Island's march to luxury began in earnest about 15 years ago when huge estates and waterfront communities with private marinas and golf courses cropped up. "Many of the communities are made up of peninsulas, surrounded by water," Michele says. "About 10-20 percent are second homes. A lot of people built second homes here and then decided to make it their primary residence."

One look out over the Chesapeake Bay from the home on Blue Bay Road in Stevensville makes it crystal clear why. And then there's the impressive interior, which blends class, luxury and livability. "The house is embellished with inspiring intricate details," Michele explains. "There is tray ceiling after tray ceiling, creating a telescopic effect. Many of the rooms have private balconies overlooking the water, the pool and abundant water fowl."

Everywhere you look there's a sumptuous view accompanied by the smell of fresh sea air. Breathe easy.
