The Hummer began life in 1995 by AM General. The original Hummer was not available
to the public and was actually called a High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle,
or Humvee. General Motors bought the Humvee nameplate from AM General in 1998 and
began offering a wide range of new and used military Hummers to the public.
The H2 is a civilian version of the original Humvee. The H2 came out in 2003 to
much fanfare. The car was bought in droves and has only recently seen its sales
dwindle due to the cost of gas. Many H2s can now be found on the open market for
a small percentage of their original cost. This is great for anyone that needs the
utility that only a used Hummer can bring.
The H3 is smaller version of the H2 that was introduced in 2006. The H3 sits on
GM’s small truck platform that has been tweaked for off-road dominance. The H3 has
accounted for a large chunk of Hummer’s sales despite it being considered underpowered
in base form and rather small for the Hummer name.
Hummers have been well known for their stellar off-road capability. This was especially
true for the original Humvee or H1 and continues with the H2 and H3. Part of this
can be contributed to the entire lineup coming with high-ground clearance, off-road
tires, four-wheel drive, and a low-range transfer case.
AM General did not disappear after selling the naming rights to the Humvee. AM General
continued to build the military version or the original Humvee until it was discontinued
in 2006. After 2006, AM General took over production of GM’s H2.
