Ferrari talks about model lineup, wait times

Ferrari told Motor Trend that it plans to introduce a new model every year—a move that follows what Lamborghini announced a year and a half ago—but still retain a lineup of four models, which equates to each model having a four-year model cycle. To accomplish this goal without introducing an all-new vehicle every four years, Ferrari wants to offer refreshed or “Modificato” facelifts (like the California M scheduled for 2013) along with its normal array of Spyders and track cars.

The company plans to continue to offer two “versatile” models like the 612 Scaligetti and the California and two performance models like the 458 Italia and 599 GTB but may widen the difference between its models in the future. It also wants to introduce a new supercar in the same vein as the Ferrari Enzo, F50, et cetera every ten years or so.

Ferrari also mentioned that hybrids are in its future but won’t be ready for mass production for at least another five years and that Ferrari is only looking at the technology because government regulations are placing demands on the company to meet certain CO2 and fuel consumption guidelines.

Another item on Ferrari’s to-do list is to cut the wait time for its vehicles to less than one year. Currently people interested in owning a new Ferrari may have to wait up to two years to take delivery of their cars. In order to cut wait times Ferrari hopes to build its cars faster, but not necessarily build more of them.
