Both the Chevrolet Corvette and the Mercedes-Benz E-class are under investigation from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for possible recalls. The Chevrolet Corvette is being investigated for a possible fuel-leak issue that could affect 33,000 units produced for 2004. The government agency has received 30 reports from consumers alleging they have noticed fuel leaking from their cars. The Mercedes-Benz E-class is under investigation because the NHTSA believes that driver’s airbag in cars built for 2005 and 2006 may not deploy properly in a crash. This recall could affect an estimated 100,000 cars. The NHTSA is also looking into all 2003–2009 E-class models and 2006–2010 CLS-class models for the same problem.
Not looking for a government investigation, Lexus is recalling 11,500 Lexus LS vehicles produced for 2010 to fix a steering wheel issue. The problem is in vehicles equipped with the optional Variable Gear Ratio Steering—a system that varies the steering ratio in low- and high-speed situations. After reaching full lock in either the left or right direction, the car’s steering wheel may exhibit a temporary off-center state despite the car driving straight. The system will then correct itself after driving a bit further.
