The Arcspeed Roadster Lives

Arcspeed, an Australian-based kit-car company, unveiled its all-new Arcspeed Roadster, a fully electric sports car, just a week after the unveiling of the Brisbane-developed Varley evR450 electric sports! This car’s body, drivetrain, and electronic controls were conceived and constructed in its native land.

The company started designing the Arcspeed Roadster back in 2006 and was originally built to accommodate a Honda Integra Type R drivetrain, but according to InsideLine,“supply issues ended the life of the gasoline-powered roadster before a single production car was built.” Not giving up on its project, Arcspeed Co-Founders Keith White and Jaron Ware were influenced by the recent popular “go green” incentive and decided to drop an electric drivetrain into the Arcspeed platform.

The Arcspeed is using the same electric motor as the Varley evR450, which puts out close to 385 lb-ft of torque; the company claims that its Roadster can go from 0–60 mph in less than 3.8 seconds. This electric roadster’s lithium-ion battery pack is mounted to the cockpit floor and sends power to the rear motor to drive the rear wheels. With the standard battery pack, the Roadster offers a range of around 95 miles, and customers will have the option to add an additional battery pack, offering a range of around 186 miles. Arcspeed says the battery pack can then be recharged “overnight” using a 10-amp 240-volt outlet.

The Arcspeed Roadster could be on the market by the end of 2012, and the company says it plans to build both left and right-hand drive versions. It anticipates a fair amount of international demand given the performance as well as the price, which is said to be under the $100,000 mark.

evR450:Australia's first electric supercar

Australia is getting in on the current eco-friendly trend with its first Australian electric supercar, which was unveiled at the third Australian electric vehicle conference in Brisbane, Australia, on October 26, 2011. The evR450 will go on sale as early as January 2012, and there is a remote possibility that it will be available for export to other markets. The evR450 has a similar style and price as the Telsa. It even matches the Roadster’s performance: The evR450 can do 0–60-mph acceleration in about 3.8 seconds and top out an an electronically limited top speed of 124 mph. Unfortunately, it will have a shorter range than the Tesla. The evR450’s base package has a range of about 95 miles, and for those who would prefer a longer range, Varley Electric Vehicles will also offer a 185-mile battery option. In comparison, the Tesla Roadster can go up to 245 miles per charge.

According to GTSpirit, the evR450 is believed to be running two 200-hp Ultramotive electric motors, offering 385 lb-ft of peak torque. It also states that the motors weigh about 88 pounds each, so the total output of 400 hp and 737 lb-ft of torque will have little car to move.

Varley’s Electric Vehicles Divisional Manager John Bettini states “the evR450 is expected to be hand built in limited numbers but will make an exception if customer’s interest dictates production volumes.” The evR450’s estimated retail price is below $200,000 AU (or approximately $213,000 U.S).

One of three real Back to the Future DeLorean cars to go to auction

One of the seven DeLorean DMC-12 time machines used—and only one of three still intact examples—in the Back to the Future movie trilogy will be going up for auction in December following its public viewing at Comic Con 2011 in July. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, which is working to provide a cure for Parkinson's disease as well as improving conditions for those living with the degenerative disorder.

This particular car was used in the filming of the third installment of the Back to the Future series and had its suspension and parts of its chassis replaced and was fitted with a Volkswagen V-6 and full roll cage. After years of abuse, a private individual purchased the car and had it restored. The car will be sold at a Profiles in History auction on an unspecified date in December.

Hulme F1 will sell for one-million dollars

**Update** That's most likely $1,000,000 NZD, which converts to $750,000 U.S. dollars.**Update**

We told you how Hulme was now accepting orders on its F1 supercar for deliveries in 2012. What we didn’t tell you was its one-million-dollar price tag. In a video released by Hulme where it seeks new investors and future owners alike, Hulme mentions the car’s official price of $1 million. This is the first time to our knowledge that the price of the Hulme F1 has been disclosed.

The good news is that the price tag comes with a new redesign. Hulme says that in preparation for the 2012 release, it redesigned the car’s front end as well as its rear wing, and from the sketch provided, we must admit that it looks much better than the outgoing car. But is it enough to draw in the investors and orders that Hulme needs?

Icon preps its new Bronco for SEMA

2012 Icon Bronco

Icon provided us with a few studio photos of its new Bronco project as it prepares for its live showing at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas, Nevada, on November 1st. As we have been telling you, Icon is celebrating 45 years of the Ford Bronco with the new limited-edition Icon Bronco.

2012 Icon Bronco chassis

The project’s focus has been to modernize the classic American SUV while retaining the original car’s spirit. Icon even went as far as to access the truck’s original blueprints to stay true to its basic form. Icon says the result is a Bronco with modern conveniences and manners that retains a classic and timeless aesthetic.

The 5.0-liter V-8 engine, currently found in the new Mustang GT and Ford F-150, was worked into the Bronco. It produces 412 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque for relatively speedy acceleration while still returning above-average fuel economy of 25 mpg. The Coyote engine is connected to either a five-speed manual or automatic transmission and powers all four wheels through a part-time 4x4 transfer case. Each Icon Bronco will be hand-built and available with a number of different options. The first ten vehicles will be a part of a limited series of serial numbered and signed units.

Will this become the world's fastest electric production car?

Rimac Concept_One

The last time the words 1,000-hp and electric car were paired together was in early 2009 with the SSC Ultimate Aero EV. But where the SSC never came into fruition, Rimac hopes to get nearly 100 units of its Concept_One into people’s hands.

Rimac Automobile’s grand entrance to the sports-car world started this week at the Frankfurt Motor Show. With no gasoline engine onboard of its Concept_One, electricity is the sole provider of propulsion but is still good for 1,088 hp, 0–60 mph in 2.8 seconds, and a top speed limited to 190 mph. Its torque number—2,800 lb-ft—is most likely much less if measured at the output shaft of the motors and not at the wheels after being magnified by the transmission and differential’s gears (you may remember Audi made similar claims with its e-tron concept in 2009). Despite the torque discrepancy, if the rest of the stats are true, the 3,637-pound Concept_One will be the world’s fastest electric production car, a title currently held by the Tesla Roadster. In the supercar arena, its only electric-only competitor is the upcoming SLS E-cell, but it will have to compete with some supercar hybrids like the Porsche 918 Spyder and BMW i8 in the marketplace.

Rimac Concept_One

The Concept_One’s powertrain consists of electric motors working independently at each of the four wheels. We presume each motor creates 272 hp, and a computer is in place to send torque to the appropriate wheels depending on driving conditions. Providing power is 92-kilowatt hours of energy (enough to power most refrigerators for a month) stored in the car’s battery modules, which is good for a range of approximately 372 miles.

Rimac Automobili spawns from Mate Rimac, whom converted his old BMW to a racing electric vehicle before starting the company now known for its electric-propulsion components. That same BMW is now the Rimac Automobili e-M3 and serves as a test mule for a variety of electric systems and in-house developments.

Rimac says the Concept_One will reach a limited number of 88 customers in 2013.

De Macross Epique GT1 will show up live in Dubai

de Macross Epique GT1

**Correction** The body is hand-formed from aluminum, and the monocoque utilizes both carbon fiber and aluminum in its construction.**Correction**

Canada is entering the automotive arena with the de Macross Epique GT1. Working with a number of third parties for development, the Epique GT1 comprises a carbon-fiber body formed around an aluminum monocoque tub. It is powered by a bespoke supercharged 5.4-liter aluminum V-8 producing north of 840 hp and 725 lb-ft of torque. Its engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission that drives the rear wheels. With its lightweight body, the GT1 sprints 0–60 mph in 3.4 seconds and through a standing quarter mile in 11.5 seconds. Top speed is 220 mph.

But it is not designed to just be fast in a straight line. It incorporates dynamic adjustable dampers with a ride-height control system that automatically lowers the car by more than an inch while increasing spring rate for more precise handling at higher speeds. It also includes a hydraulic anti-roll device. De Macross says the Epique GT1 should be capable of up to 1.3g on the skidpad.

The car will make its live debut at the 2011 Dubai International Motor Show November 10–14. Although price and production dates have not been set, the number of units to be produced will be limited to two digits.

Follow the jump for pictures of the de Macross Epique GT1 on the street.
