In the old days Porsche only built one or two models. But in the late 1970’s, they saw a need for a sporty mid-level car for those who weren’t happy with other European offerings. The Porsche 944 was built from 1982 until 1991, with production shared between Porsche and Audi. The car was so popular over 163,000 examples were built, a majority of them by the Audi plant in Neckarsulm. The 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine was built at the main Porsche plant in Zuffenhausen. Popular versions of the Porsche 944 for sale begin with the 944S. It arrived in 1987 with dual overhead cams and a bump in compression. This yielded 187 horsepower. Another popular version is the 944 Turbo, and it pushed turbo technology into the modern era. A big intercooler allowed the engine to run cooler than most turbo cars, and this allowed it to make 217 horsepower. It offered a 5.9-second 0-60 time, with or without the emissions compliance parts. Perfect weight balance was achieved by using a rear-mounted transmission. It sends power through a torque tube that also acts as a chassis stiffener. In 1989, the Porsche 944 S2 arrived with another nice increase for the naturally aspirated engine. Displacement was bored & stroked to 3.0 liters, which delivered 208 horsepower. It is still among the largest four-cylinder engines in the last 50 years. Convertible models were also introduced in 1989. Because the factory was running at full capacity, the final touches were performed by ASC, or American Sunroof Corporation in Weinsberg. The ultimate Porsche 944 was the 944 Turbo Cabriolet. It offered 250 horsepower with a rigid chassis, which is commendable even today. The 944 Turbo S is notable for its Club Sport package. This included light 16″ Fuchs wheels, Z rated tires, and 12″ Brembo brakes. Because they are unlike anything else on the road, be sure to have any 944 inspected by your local Porsche dealer before purchase. We always have a handful to offer, so check out our listings for great deals on Porsche 944 for sale.
