The new Porsche Boxster S for sale is lighter and faster as well as more fuel-efficient and agile. Sometimes it’s hard to know where the facts stop and the hyperbole begins. That is until you drive one, and then you realize words aren’t doing enough. It comes courtesy of a completely new chassis, one that it shares with the 991. It offers a longer wheelbase, wider track, and lower stance. These things alone might make it a joy in the corners, but they ensure the driver is taking full advantage of the car’s capabilities through torque vectoring and active suspension systems. The engines are slightly more powerful but 15 percent more efficient, and a very small part of that efficiency comes from electromechanical steering. The advent of electric steering throughout the model range is a little dispiriting, but most won’t notice. The absolute best part of the new 981 Boxster is its styling. Sharing much with upcoming 2015 918 supercar, the Boxster finally looks all grown up, trading its bashful, sleek design lines for assertive, edgy adulthood, and that’s no exaggeration.

The anticipated and heavily-revised 981 generation of the Boxster S arrived in showrooms this summer, replacing the 987 generation first introduced in the 2005 model year. Great care was taken to modernize the package without screwing up the basic formula that has made the two-seater a success: a pure top-down roadster experience with peerless mid-engine handling. The two powertrain choices are 2.7- and 3.4-liter flat sixes. Both are equipped with direct fuel injection, thermal management, and auto start/stop systems, contributing to the 991’s increased power and lower fuel consumption. Transmission choices for both cars are a six-speed manual or a seven-speed PDK dual clutch unit. With a lighter curb weight and more powerful engines, performance is up—60 mph arrives sooner and top speeds are higher. One thing that remains to be seen is how Porsche’s integration of electric power steering, which reviewers complain has sapped some of that trademark steering feel, continues to evolve with yearly updates. For sure, the new model will prove troublesome for competitors looking to replicate Stuttgart's magic formula.

  • PRO: It meshes hyperbole and fact

  • CON: Falls a little short of the Cayman
