When Ferrari's highly successful '250' series was superseded in 1964 by the '275', Pininfarina was once again called upon to work his magic for the Maranello concern, creating a true classic of sports car design for the 275 GTB. Penetrative nose, long bonnet, purposeful side vents, high waistline and short be-spoilered tail: these were all ingredients of the recipe, yet the result was so much more than merely the sum of its parts. The tail spoiler and cast-alloy wheels echoed developments first seen on Ferrari competition cars, while beneath the skin there was further evidence of racing improving the breed, the independent rear suspension - seen for the first time on a road-going Ferrari - employing a double wishbone and coil-spring arrangement similar to that of the 250LM racer. The adoption of a rear-mounted five-speed transaxle combining the gearbox and differential in a single unit helped improve weight distribution, and this feature would characterise future generations of front-engined Ferrari road cars. 

Now enlarged to 3.3 litres, the 60-degree V12 engine remained the familiar Colombo type, in standard form producing 280bhp at 7,600rpm. A higher - 300bhp - state of tune employing six Weber carburettors was available, and this was used for the handful of aluminium-alloy bodied 275GTB/C &#40;Competizione&#41; models built, though customers purchasing a 275 GTB for road use could also specify aluminium coachwork and/or the six-carburettor engine

Despite its near-perfect appearance, revisions to the original 275 GTB were not long in coming: a longer nose, enlarged rear window and external boot hinges being introduced towards the end of 1965. Mechanically the only major change was the adoption of torque tube enclosure for the prop shaft. The model's ultimate incarnation - the 275 GTB/4 - appeared in 1966, the '/4' suffix denoting the presence of four, rather than the original's two, overhead camshafts. 

By the mid-1960s there were manufacturers aplenty producing sports cars with twin-overhead-camshaft engines: Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin, Jaguar and Maserati to name but four. Ferrari, on the other hand, seemed content to soldier on with its single-overhead-cam V12 engine, confident that providing more cylinders than any of its rivals would be sufficient to keep the opposition at bay. So the arrival of upstart Lamborghini with its Bizzarrini-designed four-cam V12 must have caused something of a stir at Maranello. Ferrari's response - the 275 GTB/4 - first appeared at the Paris Salon in October 1966. Apart from an identifying bonnet bulge the new car was virtually identical to the existing 'long nose' 275 GTB, but beneath that altered bonnet its 3.3-litre V12 now sported four overhead camshafts. The method of valve actuation too had changed - the roller-ended rocker arms of the two-cam engine being replaced by simpler inverted bucket tappets - as had the included angle between the inlet and exhaust valves - down from 57 to 54 degrees for a more compact combustion chamber. On the induction side, a sextet of twin-choke Weber 40 DCN carburettors - optional on the two-cam 275 GTB - was standard equipment on the '/4', while the adoption of a dry-sump lubrication system fed by a 16-litre oil tank added a few extra horsepower to the total. Now 300bhp at 8,000rpm, the latter represented a 20bhp improvement on the two-cam engine's figure, while maximum torque increased from 217 to 240lb/ft at 6,000rpm. As well as the expected improvement in performance - top speed was now in the region of 165mph, 10mph better than before - the revised engine brought with it other benefits. According to Road & Track magazine, "the most surprising thing about this new engine is that the emphasis in its design was upon improved torque throughout the speed range and smoother, quieter running. Here's an engine that idles at 800rpm, smoothly and quietly, and has a useful on-the-road rev range of 1,500-8,000rpm. It can be lugged from 2,000rpm in fifth with a remarkable head of steam".

Sadly, by 1968 the progress of automobile emissions legislation had effectively outlawed the 275 GTB and its like from Ferrari's most lucrative export market, the USA, and the model was phased out later that same year. 

Ferrari 275 GTB/4, chassis number '09603', was completed as a berlinetta &#40;fixed-head coupé&#41; in April 1967 and sold new to Motor S.a.s. in Rome, Italy finished in Amaranto with beige leather interior. Its first owner was the long-time Ferrari customer and 'gentleman racer', Dr Augusto Caraceni, who competed in the Mille Miglia on two occasions &#40;1951 and 1952&#41;. Augusto Caraceni was the son of Domenico Caraceni, founder of the eponymous Rome-based tailoring business whose clientele included Humphrey Bogart and Aristotle Onassis.

The car was serviced by the Ferrari Factory Assistenza Clienti in 1967 and 1968 before being exported to the USA soon afterwards. The accompanying Massini Report lists various owners in the USA and more than one change of colour scheme. In February 1979 '09603' was converted to NART Spider configuration by Straman Auto Restoration of Costa Mesa, California. The Ferrari remained in the USA until European Auto Sales of Costa Mesa, California sold it to well-respected  collector Yoshio Matsuda in Japan in 1987. In 1996 the then Japanese owner sold the Ferrari to the Symbolic Motor Car Co of La Jolla, California, from whom it was purchased in May of that year by the current vendor, a well-known Swiss private collector, who has been its custodian for nearly 30 years &#40;bill of sale present&#41;. 

Some seven years later the owner commissioned Ferrari to undertake a complete, no-expense-spared restoration of the car, including returning it to the original berlinetta specification. The body was restored by Ferrari themselves at a cost of around 180,000, while the mechanical rebuild was  completed by Autofficina Bonini Carlo Srl, an officially authorised Ferrari service agent, at a cost of more than 120,000. Detailed invoices for these works are on file &#40;inspection highly recommended&#41;. The restoration took some three years to complete and the all-important Ferrari Classiche certification was duly obtained in June 2017. Presented in pristine condition, this quite exceptional 275 GTB/4 represents a wonderful opportunity to acquire a fully restored example of what many regard as the finest road-going Gran Turismo ever produced by Ferrari.
