Initially, the 959 was developed as a homologation model for motorsports as a project for the legendary Group B racing series but was later redefined and manufactured for the public. The engine features air-cooled cylinders, water-cooled 4-valve heads, titanium connecting rods, alloy pistons, and Nickasil-lined bores. A pair of sequential inter-cooled turbochargers worked with Bosch fuel management to produce 444 hp at 6,500 rpm which was outperforming large V-12s at this time.

With its water-cooled Biturbo engine, cylinder heads with 4 valves per cylinder, electronically controlled chassis, and aerodynamic optimized bodywork, the 959 was the first four-wheel-drive Porsche and also was the fastest car of its time with a top speed of 315 km/h.

The 959 was a time machine into the future, brilliantly designed by the development department in Weissach. The technology behind the 959 was so advanced that it was not used in other cars until many years later which is why it is such a staple in Porsche history.
