1963 Porsche 356

1963 Porsche 356B Super Electric Sunroof Coupe. 27,000 Original unrestored miles. Excellent unrestored original condition. 90% original signal red exterior with black vinyl interior. Rare electric sunroof. Original drivetrain, suspension, brakes, wheels, tools, owner's manual, etc. Kardex. Currently owned 22 years by a 47 year PCA member. Per a well-known National PCA Concours Judge, "One of the nicest unrestored, original 356's in the country."

This 356B was ordered by and delivered to Mr. Thomas Pumphrey in the fall of 1963. Per the Kardex, Mr. Pumphrey ordered the Porsche with the 75HP Super Engine, Signal Red paint, Black Vinyl Interior, Electric Sunroof, Exterior mirrors, and no radio. Mr. Pumphrey was the Howard County, Maryland Clerk of the Court and used the car frequently for work as to weather permitted and even had garage parking at work to keep the car out of the elements. He owned the car until 1981 when it was sold to a long time PCA member and good friend of mine through PCA, with approximately 19,000 miles on the odometer. In as much as Mr. Pumphrey was up in age and retired, he appointed a neighbor who was racing sports cars regionally to help him find the next custodian. At some point in the mid-'70s, Mr. Pumphrey did some minor damage to the rear of the car, between the taillights, and never repaired it because he believed the car would go to a meticulous PCA member who would have the repair work done to the highest standard. The car sat in Mr. Pumphrey's garage until sold.
That is exactly what the second owner did by having one of the best 356 restorers on the east coast make the repair. Even to this day, the blend lines are difficult to find. Other work commissioned by the 2nd owner was rebuilding the carburetors, master and brake cylinders, professionally repainting all engine sheet metal and a major service. The new owner showed the car at regional events and put less than 3000 miles on it over his 15 years of ownership.
I acquired the car in 1997 and have put approximately 5000 miles. The only work done during my ownership has been service-related, repairing the oil temperature gauge and axle boots. I did install a dual master cylinder for obvious safety reasons. The original master cylinder and brake lines are included with the sale.
The overall condition of the car is excellent. The engine and transaxle are original and have never been repaired or rebuilt. Fluid changes and valve adjustments, that's it. The paint is in excellent condition, but being almost 60 years old you can see the factory file marks of the leaded areas such as door edges and rain gutters. I have a paint meter chart showing factory quality original paint depth on all panels except the repair done to the rear of the car as previously mentioned. The undercarriage even retains the overspray on the longitudinals and battery box. The interior is near perfect except for the driver's side door sill. Mr. Pumphrey had arthritis and wore the carpet dragging his leg over the sill. Rubber is in overall excellent condition with the exception of some deterioration around the rear vent windows and sunroof seal. Once again, it is what came from the factory almost 60 years ago. The undercarriage is entirely original and in excellent condition.
This Porsche drives great. I believe this unaltered car performs as 356's did from the factory 60 years ago. Please do not hesitate to call with any questions or to make an appointment to see and test the car.
