Buy a Ferrari Testarossa
Introduced in 1984 as the Testarossa, the new 12-cylinder mid-engine Ferrari launched the Maranello based brand into a new era. With a body styled by Pininfarina, the Testarossa took its predecessors’ curvaceous and wedge-shaped form and altered it to suit the crisper lines and boxy nature of the mid-eighties automotive trend in styling. The iconic side strakes in the lateral vents on the car’s sides were a styling loophole used to foil certain countries’ standards banning large openings in the surfaces of cars’ body panels.
Featuring a flat 12-cylinder engine, the Testarossa departed from the tradition of its ancestors for a more compact configuration. With horizontally-opposed cylinders, this mid-mounted power plant saved space, allowing the engine compartment to be somewhat more compact.
The Testarossa was also featured in the third season of Miami Vice, as well as a number of video games and other screen appearances, helping it gain a much larger fan base. This base grew to the point that the Testarossa became one of the great yuppie icons of the 80s.
From its debut in 1984, the Testarossa was available for sale in Ferrari dealers’ lots until 1996, ultimately selling just under 10,000 units as one of the top selling Ferraris of all time. In 1992, the original design was overhauled and presented with similar lines in the form of the 512 TR, with increased horsepower and handling capabilities.
