Though the German company has been around since 1916, it took quite some time for them to become a full-time automotive manufacturer. At its inception, Bavarian Motor Works was the result of manufacturing companies merging to create proprietary industrial engines. With the acquisition of auto manufacturer Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach in 1929, The German car company focused on developing cars, creating the 328 sports car.
At the inception of World War 2, they were forced to cease car production, sideline their motorcycle development, and focus wholly on creating aircraft engines.
Post-war they created bicycles and dishware and did not return to creating cars until 1952.
After that, it was time to go global. 40-year old Eberhard von Kuenheim moved to Bavarian Motor Works from Daimler-Benz AG in 1965, becoming the CEO in 1970. Until his retirement in 1993, von Kuenheim oversaw massive expansions of the brand, increasing production four-fold and creating sales subsidiaries in dozens of countries.
