In 1984, with the 3-, 5-, and 7-Series firmly in place, BMW first introduced the BMW 325i for sale to the motor public. The i was based off the 320 but utilized a 2.7-liter I-6 engine making 121 horsepower. It was originally called the 325e and despite having one of BMW’s biggest six-cylinder engines, it was the most fuel efficient 3-series car at the time. In 1987, the engine saw its first bump in power to 168 horsepower and a name change. The engine size also now correlated to the name; so the 325i now came with a 2.5-liter engine. Back in 1986, Car and Driver named the sport sedan the sportiest BMW since the 2002tii.

In 1992, BMW changed the form of the BMW 3-series to one of its most celebrated to date. A new DOHC 24-valve aluminum head bumped the output to a robust 189 horsepower; it was actually as fast as the prior M3. In 1996, the engine grew in displacement to 2.8-liters and thus its name changed to 328. It was not until 1998 that BMW brought back a 2.5-liter engine but in a weird twist: decided to name the car the 323i.

In 2001, BMW decided to bring back the 325i nomenclature to lineup with the 2.5-liter engine, which just a year prior, was in the 323i. In 2006, the BMW was redesigned and name/engine alignment was once again thrown off. The car no longer had a 2.5-liter engine, but came with a 3.0-liter naturally-aspirated engine making 215 horsepower. In 2008, the engine choices once again changed as did the names. The 3.0-liter naturally-aspirated engine grew to 330 hp, and changed its name to the 328. The name has yet to be resurrected since.
