“When it launched in 1990, the Diablo was almost as hardcore as the Countach it replaced. There was no power steering and the 5.7 litre V12 drove the rear wheels without any driver aids. However, by the end of its run, with Audi now at the helm of Lamborghini, the Diablo had metamorphosed into a civilized, yet no-less staggering supercar. Giotto Bizzarrini’s blueprint for the V12 had been tweaked to 5,992 cc in capacity and fitted with electronic fuel injection to deliver 543bhp, only now all that rage could be sent to four wheels via a Viscous Traction (VT) all-wheel drive system”.

When Audi AG took over the company they naturally installed their own designers to develop the successor to the successful Diablo. A worthy heir would be difficult if not impossible to create, but time was pressing, and the original design of the Diablo had not changed too much over nearly ten years.

So first thing, Luc Donckerwolcke was asked to do when taking the job of designer at Automobili Lamborghini SpA for Audi AG was to modernize the Diablo design, and make this super car last at least one more year to bridge the gap to the introduction of the new Murciélago. Hence the Diablo VT 6.0 was born, a major development of the original Gandini design, not only on the outside but also on the inside and the underpinnings of the Lamborghini flagship. Without a doubt it was safe to say that the latest VT 6.0 model was by far the best Diablo ever and surely the easiest to use as a daily driver.

The already quick Diablo was now capable of covering the 0 to 60 mph dash in just 3.7 seconds, and on to a storming top speed approaching 210 mph, only being outpaced by a handful of exotics that included the McLaren F1 and Jaguar XJ220.
