*1969 Ford Mustang Boss 429*Â In the late 1960s as the American horsepower wars were heating up, Ford developed an all new engine that became the most fearsome car on the drag strip. Known as the Mustang Boss 429, these cars were only built in 1969 and 1970 as homologation vehicles for Fordâs NASCAR program, allowing them to use their newest big block V8. This 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 492 is one of just 859 examples built in 1969, and is the only example sold through Bickford Ford in Snohomish, WA that year. Finished in Black Jade, this car was purchased by the consignor as a barn find in Stanwood, WA, and sent to Boss expert Mark Bedney at Kevinâs Kassic Cars, to turn it into a show piece.Â From the exterior, these Boss 429s didnât look all that different from a more standard Mustang Fastback of the era. The main indications of what sit under the hood are a large Ram Air hood scoop, lower front spoiler and a subtle fender graphic that states simply âBoss 429.â This example is one of 162 finished in Black Jade, and is fitted with the attractive 15-Inch Magnum 500 wheels, which are wrapped in period-correct Goodyear Polyglas tires. This car was restored to #1 show quality, and won a gold award at the 2020 National Mustang Club Concours in Tucson, AZ and there is no reason it wonât continue winning awards at muscle car shows around the country.Â The interior of this Boss 429 was optioned from the factory with the Deluxe Interior Decor Group which fits the car with âComfortweaveâ high-back vinyl wrapped bucket seats, a floor console and wood applique on the dash and center console. A 3-spoke wood-rim steering wheel- with center blow horn- frames a set of deeply hooded gauges, and an analog clock sits in front of the passenger. Of the American performance cars of this era, the Mustangâs interior is one of the more appealing and that is especially true when paired with the upgraded interior package. As with the rest of this car, the interior was restored to as it would have been when new, and remains show quality.Â What truly separates this Mustang from all the other 1969 fastbacks, is that legendary 429 ci V8 that sits under the hood. This engine was based on Fordâs 385-family of big blocks, and features hemispherical pistons, forged internals and for 1969, hydraulic lifters. An auxiliary oil cooler was installed, and the Ram-Air hood scoop was manually controllable and allowed for the driver to open it and let in more dense, cold air. This engine is immediately identifiable by its large cylinder heads, which necessitated Ford contractingÂ  its skunkworks department Kar Kraft, to figure out how to make everything fit. This involved modifications like putting the battery in the trunk and modified front fenders. Ford claimed that these engines produced 375 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque, which period dyno tests showed to be accurate. This engine then sent power through a heavy-duty close ratio 4-speed manual, to the rear wheels through a 3.91 Traction-Lok rear axle. Due to the extra weight up font, the suspension was modified with Staggered shocks, front and rear sway bars, and heavy duty springs and shocks. Unlike many powerful cars from this era, Ford and Kar Kraft were sure to address all of the systems in the vehicle to ensure it could do more than just go fast in a straight line.Â The Boss 429 remains one of the most sought after Mustangs ever produced and this is without a doubt, one of the best examples available. Documented Low-Mile Fully Restored Boss 302 4-speed Sold New at Tasca Ford ///  Trans-Am series heritage, limited production, Tasca Ford origination, super low mileage, and authentic restoration. When it comes to a 1969 Mustang Boss 302, it doesn't get any better!  The 1969 Mustang Boss 302 is an icon of American muscle car history, born from Ford's desire to dominate the Trans-Am racing series, and today, remains a highly sought-after collector's car. The example shown here is a standout with only 8,363 miles on the odometer, one of the lowest mileage 1969 Boss 302s in existence. Purchased new from the renowned Tasca Ford in RI, it was kept by the original owner for the first 49 years of its life, selling to the second owner in 2018. Mileage was incredibly low, however time had taken its toll cosmetically, so a full restoration was performed to bring the steed back to its former glory. The body was massaged straight, glossy paint and crisp striping reapplied to the exterior. Trim either polished or re-chromed. All new soft parts and a completely new interior make the car feel day 1 new again. Attention to detail was given to all areas to preserve this low-mileage Boss's authenticity. Items such as the often-removed smog equipment and rev-limiter remain in place on the restored engine, while a correct restored radiator handles cooling, and a premium Scott Fuller reproduction exhaust system handles spent gases.  Between its flashy good looks and legendary motorsports pedigree, it's the platform that officially buried the marque's 'secretary car' stigma. The Boss 429, sometimes referred to as the "Boss 9" by blue oval enthusiasts, is arguably one of the rarest and most valued muscle cars from the era. In total, there were 859 original '69 Boss 429s and only 499 for the 1970 model year. The origin of the Boss 429 was as a result of Ford's desire to compete in NASCAR. Ford was seeking to develop a Hemi engine that could take on the Mopar Hemi boys: the 426 Hemi Charger Daytona and Plymouth Superbirds, the monsters Ford wanted to slay to achieve its desire to rule the track. NASCAR required that at least 500 cars be fitted with the competition motor and sold to the general public for homologation purposes.The Boss 429 engine featured aluminum cylinder heads, which had a modified Hemi-type combustion chamber, which Ford called "crescent". The Boss 429 engine used a single 735 CFM Holley 4-barrel carburetor on an aluminum intake manifold. All these cars had the Hurst competition shifter and 4-speed manual transmissions, and the Boss was rated very conservatively at 375 HP, while actual output was believed to be well over 500 HP.Mustangs were simply too small to accept the massive Boss 429 engine, so Ford hired Kar Kraft of Brighton, Michigan, to modify existing 428 Cobra Jet and Super Cobra Jet Mach 1 Mustangs. Modifications included widening the shock towers and extending out the inner fenders. The mounts for the front suspension were chopped and displaced to create room for the block and exhaust manifolds. The battery was repositioned to the trunk, and a stiff .75-inch sway bar was added to the rear end to improve handling since the car was now nose heavy. It was also equipped with a 3.91-ratio rear axle with a Traction-Lok limited-slip differential. In addition, a hole was cut in the hood, and a manually controlled hood scoop was added. Other features included a front spoiler and color-keyed dual racing mirrors.While the Boss 429 was an unusual platform to build a road race car from, as the 429 engine is very heavy and leads to unequal weight distribution and poor handling characteristics, the extra power of the 429 helped make up for time in the straights.This Boss 429 was purchased new on January 7, 1970 at Jim Blackman Ford in Sebring, Florida. It was originally a Calypso Coral street car that was converted to race specs in 1974 by its first owner, Neil Potter. This is "Orange Blossom III" and is one of only two Boss 429s known to have been raced in the IMSA Camel GT series. It raced 1975-77 in events like the Sebring 12 Hours of Endurance and the 24 Hours of Daytona, and it competed with all the best sports cars of the period.Retired after the 1977 race season, the car was placed into a storage building at the Sebring race track. After a tornado in 1983, the car was moved from its track storage to Potter's barn, where it was disassembled for future restoration. In 1985, Potter finally sold his car and parts as a basket case to the second owner, who planned to do a complete the restoration. It passed to the cars third owner in 1990, still in unrestored condition. A complete restoration began in 2005 and required extensive sheet metal repair. The comprehensive rotisserie restoration was completed in 2009, and the car was subsequently shown at the Mid America Shelby meet that same year, where it was awarded first in its class and listed in the Boss 429 registry.
