The highly efficient BMW i8 for sale harnesses the fusion between renewable energy and a true sporting experience. A unique all-wheel-drive system transmits the 357 combined horsepower through the hybrid, where the eDrive electric motor provides power to the front axle while the Twin-Turbo 3-Cylinder engine is mounted to the rear. This creates an efficient and elegant sports car that leaps from 0-60 mph in a swift 4.2 seconds. The exterior of the i8 resembles that of a supercar with exceptionally aerodynamic lines and a futuristic appearance. A close examination of the interior gives an elegance and simplicity desired in luxury sport vehicles. The i8 offers the driver four different driving modes for enhanced fuel economy and sporting pleasure. Comfort, Sport, Eco Pro and eDrive modes encompass all driving styles. Comfort offers a balance between performance and efficiency. Sport gears the electric motor into full-power coupling for an extra kick, whereas Eco Pro and eDrive modes are tuned to maximum fuel efficiency. In this way, the i8 creates a revolution of its own. The blue accents inside and out insinuate a degree of foresight into the future of motorsports.

Performance hybrids are here to stay, and for its second year of production, BMW's i8 receives a host of new content. While most manufacturers offer interior and exterior upgrades as additional line items, the Pure Impulse program bundles together every possible option available. Pure Impulse members will also receive a monthly magazine aimed at involving i8 owners in unique experiences and opportunities.

The i8 is a modern GT car made almost entirely of carbon fiber. The wonder material can be seen along the door jambs and other areas to make light of the car’s performance nature.

With 23 miles of pure electric range, the i8 is also a sensible choice for a daily driver. The turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder is armed with two electric motor/generators. A combined 357 horsepower and 420 pound-feet propel this composite coupe from 0 to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds.

Control of the car is managed by the eDrive system. Armed with three driving modes, Comfort, Eco Pro, and Sport, it brings together the regenerative braking, stability control and all-wheel-drive system into a cohesive unit. You won’t be bothered by much wind resistance on your way to 155 mph. That’s because the exterior is more about clean airflow than down force.

The i8 stands as a proof of concept for many forward looking technologies, and it has been so popular that BMW has added another shift at the plant to keep up with demand. Rumors of a hotter version are in the works, but this level of power, efficiency and civility won’t be easily eclipsed.

When I first caught sight of the i8, I thought it was yet another concept car that wasn’t bound to make it to production. When I spoke with my friends at BMW communication and learned that it was, in fact, destined for production and that it would be available in just a few months. That was like being told my Star Trek Teleporter would be arriving by UPS that same week. The future was most obviously now, and I was ready. Kudos to BMW designers and engineers for creating a vehicle that looks like what we all dream of with swooping lines, mysterious angles and high tech promises. And, I was allowed to get inside and play. In terms of powertrain, the i8 has a balanced combination of a three cylinder turbo internal combustion engine with 228 horsepower for the rear wheels and a two-speed electric motor for the front. The driving experience is modern and familiar, as expected of a BMW, and the i8 feels tight and responsive. Even though the engine ‘noise’ is a pre-recorded soundtrack in sync with the actual engine revs and load, I soon forgot that was the case as the whole package was simply exciting to be a part of. I am sure that when looking at purchasing an exotic plug-in car, charge time and range of battery should be taken into consideration. But if the deciding factor is performance, luxury or individuality, then the i8 is ‘lightyears’ ahead.
