For close to two decades, the Audi S8 for sale has taken one of Audi's most luxurious full-sized sedans and, with some adjustments, made it that much better. Primarily, it's been made more fun to drive.

First unveiled for the European markets in 1996 and the North American market in 1999, the S8 variant added class and beauty to an already powerful design, bringing limo-like luxury and classic German performance together in one package. Its first iteration featured subtle S8 badging throughout but was more distinguishable by its chrome-effect beltline and lower front grille trim, aluminum alloy door mirror housings and polished twin exhaust pipes.

The second generation of the S8, which ended production in 2002, was able to achieve agile performance thanks to a 4.2-liter V8 capable of creating 335 hp. In 1999, that power was increased further to 355 hp and 317 lb-ft.

2001 was the introduction of the high-performance S8, and 2005's last quarter saw the introduction of a high-performance sports variant. Now known as the S8 5.2 FSI Quattro, it created 444 hp and 398 lb-ft from a 5.2-liter, aluminum alloy, V10 engine. For a luxury car capable of acting as a daily family sedan, this S8 had some serious kick. Its top speed is electronically limited at 155 mph and claims a 5.1 second 0-62 mph acceleration time. And, all of this comes with standard all-wheel-drive. Full production of this model lasted until 2009 when the third generation was introduced.

In 2012, the S8 got another huge increase in performance. The S8 4.0 TFSI Quattro backed down from the V10 engine to a 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8, but due to increased technology and advancements in engineering, it was able to produce 512 hp, a 68 hp increase from the 2005 version. This extra kick in power dropped the 0-62 mph acceleration time to 4.2 seconds, pushing it even closer to supercar performance levels than before.

The S8 is a remarkable example of Audi's attention to the details of luxury performance. Fitted with the turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 TFSI engine making 520 horsepower and 481 pound-feet of torque, the Audi S8 accelerates from 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds. Its design is pristine; each glance at the beautifully crafted headlights requires a double- take. The interior is just as detailed as the exterior, featuring skillfully crafted leather upholstery, intuitive climate control system, in-dash DVD player and an MMI navigation system with voice control. A Bose surround sound system with 14 speakers is also featured in the S8, as is all Bluetooth connectivity imaginable. In terms of safety, the S8 features electronic stability and traction control, as well as top, corner and rear view cameras. Audi side assist is built into all models, making blind spots virtually nonexistent, and an adaptive cruise control feature makes even the most boring commutes less stressful. Yet, at the Audi S8’s very core, it is more than hungry for tarmac— it’s famished.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about driving this luxury sedan is the fact that you can go about your business almost unnoticed. The S8 is an amazing full-size luxury sedan. The flagship for a brand that has many lust-worthy cars in its lineup, and yet it bears the most subtle branding ever. But don't mistake the calm exterior for a boring driving experience-far from it. The car can race from 0-60 mph in 3.9 seconds all while conducting a conference call, which is equally impressive, as you are turbocharged all the way. I am not sure if there is a better transmission than the eight-speed automatic as it goes up and down gears. The lack of intrusive road noise is amazing even at highway speeds but there is enough rumble from the exhaust to remind you that you do have 520 horsepower. What I find even more amazing is that for a car of significant ‘stature’ the new Audi can really hustle into corners as well, thanks in no small part to the all-wheel drive. The only limiting factor may be the surprised look on your passenger’s faces as you flick it around like a large sports car.
