It has existed in three separate generations, and the third is the strongest and most impressive yet. Initially introduced in 1958 as the Silver Challenger, a sedan offered only in silver paint with either a 3.8-liter straight six or a 5.3-liter V8, the first generation of this pony car saw life from 1969 to 1974 as Dodge’s answer to the Mustang and Camaro. The second generation Dodge Challenger for sale was produced from 1978-1983, and was sold as a captive import.

The third generation saw the name resurface in 2008, with many design and performance cues taken from the first generation. The model has seen massive improvements each year, and the 2015 SRT Hellcat package was unveiled in 2014, offering the most powerful American muscle car ever produced at 707 hp.
