In 1965, Shelby American released a more powerful, upgraded version of their already ferocious 289 Cobra - the infamous 427 Cobra. Fitted with a 427-cubic-inch V8 that produced roughly 500 horsepower and a top speed of 165 mph, this was the fastest road-going production car in the world at the time of its release. 

Carroll Shelby intended to race the 427 Cobra in the FIA’s Group 3 GT class, which required the homologation of 100 ‘Competition’ examples built to racing specification. To Shelby’s dismay, only 51 examples were completed by the time the FIA inspectors arrived to verify the homologation requirements, and the Cobra was denied approval to race. The order for the remaining examples was canceled, and the final production number for Competition-spec Cobras concluded at 53, of which only 23 were finished in full race trim and sold to private racing teams. The remaining models were finished as ‘Semi-Competition’ spec examples, built to be road-legal versions of the Competition racing car. 

Now, almost 60 years later, Blue Chip Private Sales is extremely proud to present this 1965 Shelby 427 Cobra Competition Roadster, chassis no. CSX3016. One of the 23 full Competition-spec Cobras, this example was finished in Silver Mink with red, white, and blue stripes, Halibrand wheels, a black roll bar, and a black side exhaust. Sold new in February of 1966 to Ferrari driver Bob Grossman, CSX3016 was subsequently entered as competitor No. 6 in the 12 Hours of Sebring, where it finished 10th overall and first in class for Production Sports Cars over 5.0 liters. Throughout the remainder of 1966, Grossman raced the car in events across the Northeast at tracks such as Cumberland, Maryland; Bridgehampton, New York; Danville, Virginia; and Lime Rock, Connecticut. The car went on to set a new lap record at Watkins Glen, New York, where it later crashed in the rain and retired from racing. 

After passing through the hands of subsequent owners and a restoration by renowned Cobra expert Mike McCluskey in Bright Blue with white stripes, CSX3016 was purchased by a private collector who commissioned a further restoration to original specifications. Delivered to H.R.E. Motorcars, Inc. in Freeport, New York, the proposed work included the dismantling of the exterior, interior, and parts of the chassis and engine bay to fully repair and refinish the car in its original colors. H.R.E. then reassembled the car with refurbished parts and fully detailed it with the correct decals, wheels, and tires as raced by Grossman. This restoration is documented by noted Cobra authority and H.R.E. President William H. Andrews, who also confirmed in a letter the authenticity of CSX3016 as the Bob Grossman Sebring Cobra. The letter also describes the restoration and specifically differentiates this example from other Cobras. The car also benefits from a rebuilt carburetor, a new fuel cell bladder inside a fuel cell containing Mike McCluskey’s logo, and is fitted with the correct batteries and fuel filter. 

Now offered for sale, CSX3016 comes complete with original Halibrand wheels and Goodyear Blue Streak tires, receipts, authenticity letter from William H. Andrews, and restoration documents. An authenticated piece of 1960’s racing history, this 1965 Shelby 427 Cobra Competition would make a fantastic addition to the collection of any esteemed racing or automotive enthusiast.
