Alas, with its costly sectioned bodywork and lack of a rear seat, the Pan American was dubbed a bit too far afield for the automaker and was not greenlit for full production. It did, however, lead directly to the Packard Caribbean, which used many Pan American styling cues in a more practical package. Each of these factory custom cars was built by Mitchell-Bentley of Ionia, Michigan, which gave them a hood with a prominent full-width scoop, a marked lack of side chrome, special flared wheel openings, and Senior-style horizontal taillights. Under the hood was Packard's legendarily smooth 327-cubic-inch inline eight-cylinder engine, producing 180 horsepower and considerable torque.rnrnThe Caribbean's substantial $5,210 price tag and limited run of just 750 examples for its 1953 debut ensured that it was, and would remain, a highly exclusive automobile.rnrnThe Caribbean offered here was formerly part of the vast Michigan stable of Richard and Linda Kughn, the husband-and-wife team of enthusiasts who, over 40 years, enjoyed the passionate collecting of vintage automobiles, with a particular focus on fine Full Classics and 1950s American convertibles. Caribbeans were a particular favorite and the Kughns enjoyed owning several, including this car, over the years. When they first began to thin their collection in 2002, this example was sold to James McLennan of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. In his ownership it received a full restoration in Gulf Green. Thus completed, the car enjoyed a successful show career, most prominently receiving the James J. Nance Award for the Post-War Best of Show Packard driven in a tour and to the show field during the Packard Club National Meet in 2008.rnrnAcquired from Mr. McLennan by fellow Bloomfield Hills resident Terence E. Adderley, the car has been well-preserved in the Adderley's halls. Inspection shows that it is powered by a nine-bearing 1953 engine, as used in the Patrician and Executive limousine models, but it otherwise appears quite correct and remains in excellent overall cosmetic condition, requiring only mechanical sorting for its new owner. By this time, all Packards featured the innovative front and rear Torsion-Level suspension system, which automatically leveled the car to suit the road surface, making the company's products some of the smoothest-riding and best-handling full-size automobiles of the era. Under the hood were modern overhead-valve V-8 engines, as well as the Ultramatic transmission, which featured a locking torque converter to approximate the economy and performance of a manual gearbox and had by 1955 been updated with the ability to start in either high or low gear ranges. These mechanical advancements were blended with fresh, modern lines penned by chief stylist Richard Teague.rnrnLeading the Packard lineup was the luxe Caribbean convertible, equipped with a 275-horsepower, 352-cubic-inch V-8 featuring dual four-barrel carburetors and topped by the iconic batwing air cleaner. Unique features of the Caribbean included standard three-tone color schemes, a full leather interior, a striking ultra-deluxe dashboard layout with a gold-tone textured insert and two-tone steering wheel. For 1956, the engine was enlarged to 374 cubic inches and was rated at 310 horsepower. Additionally, the cars featured the heavily revised, push-button Ultramatic Drive transmission. Sadly, the 1956 Caribbean was the final convertible ever built by Packard before the company entered liquidation during the summer of 1958.rnrnOffered here is one of the most famous post-war Packards, a factory triple-white Caribbean aptly named The White Cloud in Packard Club enthusiast circles. Benefiting from one of the rarest and desirable suites of factory options, The White Cloud was specified new with a push-button automatic transmission, Solex tinted windshield, Power Lock differential, chromium-plated wire wheels, and a Dover White exterior over all-white leather upholstery beneath a black convertible top. This famous Caribbean also features all available power options, including rear-mounted, dual, and synchronized power antennas. rnrnThe White Cloud was delivered new to Gulfstream Motors in Palm Beach, Florida, and was owned for many years by the noted Packard enthusiast Edwin Jones. While under his care, this Packard was treated to a complete concours-quality restoration of evidently high quality and authenticity, and afterward it continued a schedule of regular exhibition at Packard Club events.rnrnMore recently, The White Cloud's previous owner-a passionate collector of Packard automobiles-exported it to Norway and treated it to the complete restoration which it wears today within his own personal restoration facility. The consignor reports that all the OEM and NOS parts for this monumental undertaking were purchased directly from respected Packard authorities Fred Bruner and Max Merritt, and that absolutely everything on this important post-war Packard was entirely rebuilt and renewed. Wherever possible, original parts were retained, reconditioned, or restored by the owner's team of in-house specialists.rnrnThe Caribbean has some of the finest road manners of any full-sized model of its era. Noto by the late, noted Packard historian, restorer, and Classic Car Club of America co-founder Robert Turnquist, this 840 Custom Eight Phaeton was delivered in Mr. Turnquist's hometown of Morristown, New Jersey on 16 September 1930. Indeed, the car's original specification was described by Mr. Turnquist in his book, The Packard Story, and its history is fortunately further borne out by the car's original vehicle number plate, which remains on the firewall. Mr. Turnquist recounted that his records on the Packard picked up in 1958 with the car in the ownership of a Mr. Fazio in Hillsdale, New Jersey; he included a photograph taken that year, noting that the car was then still in original condition. The car next appeared in 1970 with Walter Wary of Morristown, who per Mr. Turnquist sold it to Robert Tuthill.rnrnNext the Packard appeared in the ownership of Rick Littlefield of Bronson, Michigan, from whom Charles J. Noto acquired it in 1999. Mr. Noto and John Barbato completed a full restoration by 2001 and it is that splendid work that the Packard still wears today. The car achieved its Antique Automobile Club of America Grand National First Prize in 2002 and its Primary First from the Classic Car Club of America the following year. Since that time, it has been largely on display within Mr. Noto's private showroom, maintained in excellent cosmetic order.rnrnThe Packard still shows extremely well, with its rich black paintwork and dark red leather interior in outstanding condition throughout. Blend's The Magnificent Packard Twelve of Nineteen Thirty-FourrnRetains its original chassis, engine, steering box, and body from delivery in 1934rnA genuine example from one of Packard's ultimate yearsrn rnrnIntroduced in August 1933, the Eleventh-Series Packard Twelve reflected a growing influence in streamlined design, and today they are considered some of the most beautifully drawn and exquisitely proportioned cars ever built by the firm. Among the roster of available body styles, the Convertible Victoria on the 147-inch-wheelbase 1107 platform stands tall, with its svelte and elegant lines that, as historian Edward J. Blend noted, represented a design high point for its era. rnrnVehicle number 747-22 is one of fewer than 10 known surviving original Convertible Victorias on the 1107 Twelve chassis, as recorded by Mr. Blend in his landmark work, The Magnificent Packard Twelve of Nineteen Thirty-Four. Actually the 12th example of the style built by vehicle number, it was shipped across the Atlantic and delivered in Milan, Italy in March 1934, reportedly for that year's auto show.rnrnEnthusiast Dr. Veniero Molari of Turin acquired the car and undertook its original restoration, then retained it for many years. It was in his ownership that the Packard was recorded in Mr. Blend's book in 1972 and, despite the distance, Mr. Molari was an active member of the Classic Car Club of America, who occasionally ventured to attend the club's annual get-togethers in Hershey, Pennsylvania. In 2000 it was finally released from Dr. Molari's ownership, brought to the United States, and acquired by longtime Packard collector David Kane, who undertook a fresh cosmetic restoration in the hands of the respected specialists Stone Barn of Vienna, New Jersey.rnrnWith the work completed, the Packard was acquired by another noted collector, John Groendyke of Enid, Oklahoma, then passed to Carmine Zeccardi of New Jersey, from whom Charles J. Noto purchased it in May 2003. It has been one of the prizes of the Noto Collection ever since, exhibited at such events as the CCCA Metro Region Grand Classic of 2009, where it was judged a Primary First Prize winner with 98.75 points, and winning an Antique Automobile Club of America Senior First Prize at Hershey in 2003. The restoration has held up extremely well and is still in excellent overall condition, with light age and wear visible to the engine compartment and chassis finishes. Significantly, the car retains its original chassis frame, engine, and steering box, all of which are numbered very near one another, and is believed to retain its original front axle, as well, though the number could not be located during cataloguing. It also retains its original body tag under the passenger seat.rnrnAn outstanding and pure example of the Eleventh Series Twelve Convertible Victoria, the Italian Victoria is a marvelous combination of superb engineering, elegant body design, and American restoration craftsmanship, and stands as one of the very finest of its type. Sadly, all of that would end by the late 1950s. The company's last prestigious, low-production offering was the Caribbean convertible of 1955 and 1956. rnrnThis top-of-the-line model had been completely redesigned for 1955, and at $5,932, the Caribbean was breathtaking in more ways than one. All cars were equipped with a 275-horsepower, 352-cubic-inch V-8 with dual four-barrel carburetors, topped by the iconic batwing air cleaner. Unique features of the model included standard three-tone color schemes, a full leather interior, a striking ultra-deluxe dashboard layout with a gold-tone textured insert and two-tone steering wheel, and a host of standard amenities. Perhaps unsurprisingly, a mere 500 examples were produced in 1955.rnrnThis Caribbean convertible on offer is one example of these rare and desirable cars from the firm's final years. It left the factory finished in the scheme that can still be found on the car today, with a White Jade, Fire Opal, and Onyx exterior and a matching white/black/red leather interior. The Caribbean is equipped with a driver mirror and power seat, windows, convertible top, steering, and brakes. The interior additionally features a clock and radio. rnrnOffered now from the Boucher Collection, this Packard benefits from a well-preserved older restoration that has retained lustrous brightwork and deep color in the paint. The leather throughout the cabin likewise appears to show very little wear. Bolstering the quality of this work, two medallions are affixed to the front grille noting a Senior National First Prize in 2000 and a Grand National winner, First Prize in 2001 from the Antique Automobile Club of America. Instead, Packard took four-door, six-passenger sedans off the production line, and the body supplier, Briggs Manufacturing Company, changed the roofline to incorporate a liftgate and tailgate. Using ash and maple, Briggs converted the sedan into a full station wagon and installed steel supports at the B-posts and D-posts. It was also the most expensive of the short-wheelbase Packards, as it sold for $3,424. No doubt in part due to this price tag, only 3,885 Station Sedans were built from 1948 through 1950, with the majority produced in 1948; relatively few of these have survived to the present. rnrnThis stylish 1948 Packard Station Sedan is painted in Cavalier Maroon and underwent an extensive cosmetic and mechanical restoration under previous ownership. The exterior birch framing was restored by a specialist in New Zealand while the car was there for a 1,200-kilometer tour of the South Island. The interior ash was replaced by the well-known Antique Auto Restorations, of Seaside, California. Subsequently, the Packard was repainted, and the wood was refinished to its original luster. The chrome was also re-plated, leaving the brightwork free of any serious blemishes, and it continues to exhibit an excellent shine. rnrnBeneath this Station Sedan's Cormorant mascot-adorned hood sits a smooth-running 288-cubic-inch inline-eight, which is paired with a three-speed column-shift transmission. The Electromatic clutch permits shifting between second and third gears without the clutch, and the overdrive enables easy cruising for highway travel. After acquisition by the Bill Boucher Collection in 2014, the Station Sedan's well-maintained restoration was further burnished, including a full overhaul of its fuel tank, as well as fitment of a new ignition switch and numerous small interior trim components. The Sixth Series Standard Eights like the 626 Runabout offered here rode on a 126.5-inch wheelbase and were powered by an all-new 320-cubic-inch inline eight-cylinder engine rated at 90 horsepower and paired with a three-speed manual transmission. Power was effortless with superb torque and uncannily smooth acceleration all the way up to a top speed nearing 80 mph.rnrnUnderneath, the live rear axle with semi-elliptical leaf-spring suspension provided superior comfort and roadholding, making the Standard Eight among the most capable prewar cars, eminently enjoyable even today. Also appealing, their characteristic Bijur lubrication system makes routine maintenance less of a chore. Disc wheels were standard equipment, while the dignified dual, side-mounted spares seen on this charming example were an added option.rnrnBenefiting from previous long-term ownership, this handsome Standard Eight is fitted with the seldom seen but highly attractive Runabout body style (352). A perfect configuration for vintage touring, the car wears a charming older restoration in beige over brown upholstery and rides on matching beige disc wheels shod with wide whitewall tires. The car is well-appointed with many desirable period Packard accessories, including bumper-mounted flag holders, wind wings, cowl-mounted chrome spotlights, a bumper-mounted driving light, and a stone guard, to name a few. Packard's signature Goddess of Speed mascot tops the enormous radiator to complete the period appearance. Just a year later, the car was sent out to receive a restoration that has stood the test of time thanks to diligent care. For 1953, Mitchell-Bentley Corporation of Ionia, Michigan was sent 750 standard Packard convertibles, which it customized into a new, limited-edition ragtop, to be dubbed the Caribbean. With its highly distinguished design and luxurious appointments-standard power everything, full leather interior, three-way radio with power antenna, and five Kelsey-Hayes chrome wire wheels-the Caribbean came to represent the penultimate expression of Packard quality, luxury, and style.rnrnThe model continued into 1954 with newly restyled headlamp rims, chrome trim added to the hood scoop, lowered rear wheel housings, two-tone paintwork, Caribbean script added to the rear fenders, and side moldings that swept off the beltline and slipped below the crest of the rear fenders into a distinctive taillight treatment. This was the final year for the original Caribbean design, and for the second time around, only 400 were made. As a result, the 1954 models are the hardest to find of the first-generation Caribbeans.rnrnFinished in Gulf Green and Sahara Sand with a white convertible top, this Caribbean is equipped with both available options, power windows and seats. The interior is trimmed in a two-tone color scheme, matching the exterior, and features a clock, radio, and seatbelts. The example offered here was the 13th of this brief and glorious run. Darrin historian Don Figone notes that it was first restored in the early 1950s by then-owner Glen Sheppard of Piedmont, California. In Mr. Sheppard's ownership, it was featured in the September 1953 issue of Road & Track magazine, showing just how special these Packards had already become, scarcely a decade after production ended. The article notes that the car had been restored with the assistance of the Earle C. Anthony Packard dealership in San Francisco in sourcing hard-to-find parts and that the passion project had cost Mr. Sheppard some $6,000-about the same as a new Cadillac limousine in 1953.rnrnMr. Sheppard eventually sold the car to Wendell Hawkins, actually a dealer of new Packards in Houston, Texas. In the early 1970s it is believed to have passed to a gentleman in Los Angeles, in whose care it was one of the two Packard Darrins used in the filming of the 1970s television detective series Banacek, starring George Peppard. This car was used for the scenes filmed in Hollywood; protagonist Thomas Banacek's Packard was supposed to be a 1941 model, so this car had the distinctive 1942 side grilles-as well as its red leather interior-disguised in most of its scenes. It was thereafter acquired by the noted Classic enthusiast Gifford Oborne of New Jersey, who considered it one of the gems of his large collection. Later it was part of the renowned collection of legendary Packard enthusiast and connoisseur Ralph Marano.rnrnAfter Mr. Marano acquired the first 1942 Packard Darrin from Bob Turnquist's estate, this one was sold on to Art Polacheck of Florida, from whom the late Terence E. Adderley acquired it in 2008. It has since remained on exhibit in the Adderley Collection for the past 16 years, alongside many other significant Full Classics. While the restoration is now older, it is still highly attractive. Importantly, while the full engine number is illegible, it does have the CE prefix identifying it as a correct 1942 unit.
