New headlamps and the repositioning of the lights from the cowl to the front fenders were other notable stylistic changes. Though a host of custom bodies were available from the finest coachbuilders of the era, most Packards wore factory production bodies. Well-built, shockingly smooth, and overly luxurious, even these were frighteningly expensive, selling for the price of a nice house in 1930.rnrnAmong the most desirable Packard body styles available in the Seventh Series was the two-door roadster, a classic open model with expansive seating for two and auxiliary space for two more in the rear rumble seat. So emblematic of the 1930s Classic Era, these dashing and well-proportioned roadsters were must-haves for country estates and summer homes throughout the United States.rnrnAccording to its firewall plate, the car was originally delivered by the Sharpe Motor Company of Chicago on 3 May 1930. It is believed to have been restored in 1975 and, afterward, was for some years part of the renowned Pennsylvania collection of the late Ray Bowersox, who displayed it regularly in Classic Car Club of America events. Mr. Bowersox sold the Packard in 1990 to noted Swiss enthusiast Hans Luscher, who maintained it as part of his small, select collection of well-restored CCCA Full Classics for over a decade. Finally, in 2002, it was released from the Luscher collection, returned to the United States, and after several years and a light cosmetic freshening in California, was acquired for the collection of its current owner.rnrnShowing patina to its black and yellow finish and brown leather interior, the Packard is still quite charming, with an abundance of accessories including the famous Adonis radiator mascot, stone guard, dual Pilot Ray driving lights, cowl lights, and side-mounted spares. The new medium-priced One Twenty model was selling very well, providing much-needed cash in the Depression-weary market. At the other extreme, the Twelve offered power and prestige, although its high price limited sales to fewer than 700 units. Between those extremes was a car of sensible opulence, the Super Eight, which offered a range of attractive body styles on the same long-wheelbase chassis found on Twelves, but it came with a 150-horsepower L-head eight-cylinder engine. As the Super Eight was smooth-running, easy to maintain, and somewhat better balanced than the Twelve, while only being slightly less powerful, it was a veritable performance bargain. Survivors are much favored for their pleasing and reliable touring performance.rnrnThis attractive Coupe Roadster was acquired by the consignor in the mid-eighties after sitting for years in an open field in Massachusetts. A preeminent cardiac surgeon who helped pioneer artificial heart technology and procedures, the consignor undertook a restoration of the car over 15 years, enlisting the help of numerous professionals and marque experts. rnrnThe Packard's meticulous refurbishment-a remarkable feat when comparing its present condition to photos on file that show it pre-restoration-has aged gracefully and presents well. This is thanks in no small part to the striking Coupe Roadster bodywork, replete with chromed radiator shell-a rare option-and the well-appointed interior with appealing details, such as the polished wood shifter knob showcasing an intricate natural grain pattern.rnrnIn 2025, work continued to keep the car in good order, including refurbishing the fueling system by rebuilding the carburetor, replacing the fuel pump, and removing, cleaning, and refinishing the gas tank. In addition to a refreshed exterior design, the 1954 models received, as with all Senior Packards, a one-year-only, 359-cubic-inch straight-eight engine paired with a standard Ultramatic transmission. This would be the final year for Packard's legendary straight-eight; 1954's 359, with an aluminum head and a four-barrel carburetor, did its lineage proud while producing an impressive 330 pound-feet of torque. And with nine main bearings, it did it all extremely smoothly. rnrnResearch on file traces this well-preserved Caribbean back to a Mrs. Beverly F. Grose of St. Joseph, Michigan, recorded as the daughter of its original owner. It apparently remained in the Midwest until 1981, when it departed for Florida and later, North Carolina. In 2009, after acquisition by a private family collection in the Pacific Northwest, it was serviced by Green Enterprises of Kent, Washington. In addition to typical service items and fluid changes, invoices on file show that the car's Ultramatic transmission, as well as the water pump and distributor, were rebuilt. Its rear end and axle have been replaced with units believed to have been sourced from an earlier Packard. rnrnOverall, this Caribbean is much as it was when it left the factory: Original paint and trim markings still visible on the side of the glovebox confirm that it wears its factory exterior colors of Polaris Blue and Sahara Sand over a Blue and White Genuine Leather interior. Paintwork, brightwork, and upholstery display only modest signs of age and wear. The engine retains its proper 359-specific aluminum head, which was often replaced in-period with a more readily available cast iron head over the course of routine maintenance.rnrnAll is consistent with the 8,546 miles indicated at cataloguing, believed to be original (and further supported by a previous title copy on file). The U.S. Royal Air Ride whitewall tires wrapped around Kelsey Hayes wire wheels-including the unused spare in the rear continental kit-are too old to bear a standardized date code and are of the correct type originally fitted to this era's Packards. These, too, are understood to be original! rnrnRare and flamboyant, the 1954 Caribbean is among the last great offerings of a hallowed Detroit marque.
