V-12 engine rated at 120 hp; three-speed manual transmissionrnFinished in factory-correct black over red leather with a black top rnCCCA Full Classic and National First Prize winner; featured in Ford marketing materials and the subject of several magazine articles rn rnrnCommissioned by Lincoln boss Edsel Ford and styled by Ford designer Bob Gregorie on the V-12 Zephyr chassis, the Continental would go on to become a design legend in its own time after entering production in 1940, with only 350 convertibles and 54 coupes produced that first year. rnrnThe restored example offered here shipped on 1 April 1940, finished as it is today in the handsome color scheme of black with a red leather interior and a black convertible top. It came equipped with a radio, a cowl antenna, stone deflectors, and Firestone whitewall tires, according to a copy of its original build sheet. rnrnAlthough the car's early history is unknown, its fate from the 1960s forward is well documented, as the car has been the subject of various magazine articles over the years. Les Klinge of West Caldwell, New Jersey acquired the cabriolet in the early 1960s after discovering it languishing in a New Jersey farmyard. He would restore the neglected Lincoln over the ensuing years, finishing it in blue with a maroon interior. An article about the car in the fall 1967 issue of the Lincoln & Continental Owners Club's magazine, Lincoln & Continental Comments, includes photos of the car in its unrestored state. Klinge would hold onto the cabriolet until 1974, storing it for a time in a garage in suburban New Jersey before Larry Colwell of Michigan would acquire it and retain it for the next 35 years. As Colwell himself recounted in a cover article he wrote for the March-April 1977 issue of Torque, the Michigan Region Classic Car Club of America's  magazine, he managed to track down the car's original build sheet on file at the Benson Ford Research Center in Dearborn, Michigan and set about restoring the lovely Lincoln back to factory specification-save for the previously installed Columbia two-speed rear axle, added by a former owner. rnrnWith the restoration completed sometime around the late Seventies or early Eighties, Colwell showed the car extensively, winning a Classic Car Club of America National First Prize and reportedly securing best in class at the Meadow Brook Concours d'Elegance three times. Besides being featured in various publications, including the October 1992 issue of the British magazine The Automobile, the cabriolet was also photographed for artwork commissioned by Ford to commemorate the Continental's 50th anniversary, as well as for the 1995 Continental's product and marketing guide. rnrnIn 2008, Colwell sold the car to a Maryland-based collector, who then sold it to the consignor in 2018. The car has been fastidiously maintained under the current owner's conscientious care, most recently receiving new carpeting in 2023.rnrnA CCCA Full Classic to be enjoyed at any number of events and tours, this well-preserved and relatively rare Continental Cabriolet is an excellent find, the quintessential American cabriolet of its day, exuding gorgeous design with superb hand craftsmanship. Gregory devised a convertible coupe on the existing Lincoln Zephyr chassis with Edsel Ford's input, which stipulated that it be long and low for a speedy look. Launched as the 1940 Lincoln Zephyr Continental, the long-running model has become the marque's most iconic.  In 1951, the Museum of Modern Art chose the Continental as one of eight automotive works of art, while eight years later Time ranked it within the top 10 of the 100 best-designed products. rnrnThe 1948 Continental, an example of which is offered here, was a prewar holdover as Lincoln prepared an all-new model for 1949. It remained exclusive, large, and luxurious, clearly benefitting from hand craftsmanship. Power came from a 305 cubic-inch L-head V-12 engine rated at 130 horsepower. Just 847 Club Coupes and 452 Convertibles were produced for the 1948 model year.  rnrnThis example was assembled on 5 November 1947, according to a copy of its original build sheet. It came finished from the factory, as it is now, in attractive Grotto Blue with a tan top. The interior featured blue leather and whipcord upholstery while options included a radio, heater, chrome bands, fog lamps, and whitewall tires. rnrnAcquired by the consignor in 2010, this Continental has been well maintained as part of a collection. In early 2023, the engine and other mechanical components were refurbished to keep the car in top condition. This 1942 Lincoln Continental cabriolet is one of 136 examples produced for the model year, and is finished in Bristol Blue over tan leather and powered by a 306ci flathead V12 paired with a three-speed manual transmission with overdrive. Equipment includes a vacuum-operated soft top, vacuum-operated windows, a spare tire carrier, gold interior trim, and a Zenith Auto-Radio AM radio with a foot-controlled automatic change cycle. The car was acquired by the current owner in 2005 following a refurbishment that was reportedly completed by Bart Newlin, and is said to have included both a mechanical and cosmetic refresh. The most recent service was performed in 2016 and is said to have included installing rebuilt water pumps, cleaning the fuel tank, and refreshing the cooling system. The body was reportedly refinished in Bristol Blue during the refurbishment. Details include a tan vacuum-operated soft top, push-button door handles, rear fender skirts, chrome bumpers and trim, and the Ball and Wing hood ornament unique to 1942 models. The seller notes that there is a paint blemish ahead of the left-rear fender.Factory steel wheels feature chrome hubcaps and trim rings and wear wide whitewall tires. The namesake Continental spare tire is mounted in a color-matched carrier at the rear. The suspension was reportedly rebuilt during the refurbishment. The cabin has been reupholstered and features tan leather seats and door panels along with matching carpets. Metal details throughout the interior are finished in gold, and amenities include vacuum-operated windows, push-button door handles, an analog clock, and a Zenith Auto-Radio AM radio with foot control.The 306ci flathead V12 features cast iron heads and was factory rated at 130 horsepower. The motor was reportedly rebuilt during the refurbishment, and subsequent service in 2016 reportedly included installing rebuilt water pumps, cleaning the fuel system, and refreshing the cooling system.

Continental Mark V

*1979 Lincoln Continental Mark V Collector Series*Â Some people claim that their classic car is in âShowroom Conditionâ but in the case of this Lincoln Continental Mark V, it is the truth. After spending its entire life stored indoors, this Mark V Collectors Series shows a mere 45 miles on the odometer and retains the original window sticker, still attached to the driverâs side window. No matter how much you may spend restoring a car, there is absolutely no replicating the originality found on this stunning time capsule example.Â Â Built between 1977 and 1979, the Lincoln Continental Mark V was the ultimate American luxury coupe of the era and, at 230 inches in length, the longest 2-door coupe ever offered by Ford. Based on the prior generation Mark IV, the Mark V both grew dimensionally, while simultaneously dropping nearly 400 lbs in curb weight and increasing the level of luxury on the interior. The Mark V design featured a number of hallmarks from the Continental line that included rear âOpera Windowsâ as well as covered front headlight, front fender louvers and the âContinental Kitâ rear decklid which harkened back to the Mark 1 Continental.Â Â This Continental Mark 5 is finished in White with a white vinyl roof and the body is in absolutely immaculate condition throughout. As you look around the car, you notice things like the original factory stampings on the inside buckets of the headlight housing are still present and bright yellow- something that would have worn off decades ago on any other Mark 5. The multi-spoke turbine-style wheels are a combination of gold and bare metal and they have that unique gloss to them that would be nearly impossible to recreate in the aftermarket. The aforementioned rear âContinental Kitâ style trunk lid features a beautiful vinyl accent on the rear semi-circle with the Continental name and Lincoln badge affixed within.Â Â The interior is the ultimate in 1970s luxury- a sea of deep blue thick pile carpets and cushy blue velour upholstery. Massive front bucket seats with a console between them are like sitting on pillows, and envelop you as you sit into them. The blue dashboard features a combination of wood applique and stainless steel and in front of the driver sits a beautiful Cartier analog clock that was part of the âCollector Seriesâ package. Like with the rest of the car, when you look in the interior, the overall condition is second to none and the 45 miles on the odometer and long term indoor storage are entirely believable.Â Â Over the past few decades, the large American luxury coupe has more or less died out. There is no doubt that the pinnacle of that genre of car were the vehicles coming out of Detroit in the 1970s with the Continental Mark 5 being one of the very best. This example presents a truly once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase what is sure to be one of the only, if not the only, sub-50 mile examples of this car in existence, presented in as-new condition from bumper to bumper.
