Having already established himself as a serious automobile manufacturer with the introduction of the Mangusta Coupe, Alejandro De Tomaso commissioned Lamborghini designer Gianpaolo Dallara to produce the chassis for his following project, the mid-engine supercar by the name of Pantera. Ford Motor Company was DeTomaso's partner at the time of the Pantera's introduction in 1971. Just like the earlier Mangusta, the Pantera relied on a Ford V8 power plant mated to a ZF all-synchro five-speed transaxle. DeTomaso's relationship with the Ford Motor Company led to an arrangement whereby the Pantera was distributed through select Lincoln-Mercury dealerships in the USA until the 1974 when Ford and DeTomaso decided to part ways. After this point, DeTomaso continued to sell the Pantera in Europe. For the 1974 model year Ford offered 137 US spec GTS to the market (97 to the 49 states and 40 re-documented as 1973 models for California). Due to the falling out between Ford and DeTomaso all references to DeTomaso were removed from the coach of the US spec GTS and replaced with either GTS or Ghia badges.This 1974 DeTomaso Pantera GTS is just one of just 97 produced for the U.S.-market and has just 9,012 original miles on the odometer. The 351ci Cleveland Ford V8 produces 266 HP and 301 lb-ft of torque with single 4-barrel carburetor backed by a ZF 5-speed manual transmission. Independent unequal length A-arm suspension with front and rear anti-sway bars works with rack-and-pinion steering for supercar-level road control. American-market Pantera GTS left DeTomaso with a blacked-out hood and deck lid, black anodized trim, special exhaust tips, rivet-mount fender flares, sport steering wheel and rocker-panel graphics. A removable rear-window louver accents the black and red paint on the monocoque body. Electric windows and air conditioning add luxury to sport in the '70s-perfect interior, and a 200 MPH speedometer and 8,000 RPM tachometer are ready to gauge 6-second 0-60 MPH launches and the Pantera's 150 MPH top speed. The Pantera GTS rolls on Goodyear Arriva tires mounted on 15Ã8-inch rear and 15Ã7-inch front Campagnolo magnesium wheels with a spare in its factory-issue location. Our Pantera GTS comes with its original owner's manual and books, Owner-card, tool kit and miscellaneous records. It was De Tomaso's first proper foray into the world of high-performance cars and one of the world's first supercars, boasting in excess of 300 brake horsepower, a top speed pushing the other side of 250 km/h, and coachwork by none other than Bertone and later Ghia's Giorgetto Giugiaro, including the gullwing engine cover that had been intended for Giotto Bizzarrini.rnrnStyled by Giugiaro, the De Tomaso is the epitome of late-1960s design: a low-slung wedge boasting a quad-headlamp nose, vast haunches, and a tail peppered with slots and vents. The crowning glory is aluminium rear bodywork that hinges up-gullwing-style-to reveal the American-made power unit. rnrnThis attractive Mangusta is a European-specification example reportedly delivered new to Italy on New Year's Eve in 1970 with the desirable quad-headlamp nose arrangement. It has resided in Barcelona with the consignor for nearly a decade, and at time of his purchase this Mangusta reportedly wore the factory shade of Avorio Safari. rnrnUnder the consignor's purview, the car has been comprehensively restored to the current color combination of Rosso Corsa over black leather, and tastefully modified to suit his discerning penchant for increased performance and safety. As such, this Mangusta is currently powered by an upgraded Hi-Po Ford V-8 engine which is fed by a quarter of Weber carburettors and mated to a correct-type five-speed ZF transaxle. rnrnCosmetically, the car's aggressive visage is enhanced by a pair of Vitaloni side mirrors, and staggered centre-lock Campagnolo alloy wheels shod in Michelin Pilot Sport rubber. The interior is highlighted by an air conditioning system, AM/FM radio, power windows, and a leather-wrapped De Tomaso-Ferrero steering wheel, which fronts the full suite of correct Veglia Borletti instrumentation which proudly features the De Tomaso logo.
