With Ford seeking to acquire an exotic car company in the late 1960s, they would land at the doorstep of retired racing car driver turned automotive manufacturer Alejandro De Tomaso. Having already created a charming four-cylinder Vallelunga and radical V8 Mangusta Coupe, Ford would reach a deal to import 10,000 of their new Pantera design to be sold at Lincoln-Mercury dealerships around the country. Designed by Tom Tjaarda at Ghia, the Pantera would feature crisp lines and a long snout sitting atop a pressed-steel unit chassis, powered by an off-the-shelf Cleveland V8 producing over 300-horsepower. Debuting at the New York Auto Show in 1970, a top speed of over 150 miles per hour was rumored along with many amenities such as air conditioning, which American buyers demanded. Despite the Pantera being produced in Europe until 1991, in 1974 having imported fewer than 6,000 Panera’s, Ford would end their arrangement with De Tomaso. 
 
 

This car is part of the Retro Motors Collection, which comprises over 30 cars largely from the 1950s through today, with a focus on American muscle and high-powered European sports cars.

Powered by a 351 Cleveland V8 paired with a 5-speed ZF manual transaxle, the Pantera is known for its Ford GT-inspired mid engine layout, allowing optimal weight distribution and go-kart-like handling. This example received a full engine rebuild in 2014 and has been updated with a Holly Carburetor, high-compression pistons, a bigger camshaft, and Pertronix Ignition. Having already established himself as a serious automobile manufacturer with the introduction of the Mangusta Coupe, Alejandro De Tomaso commissioned Lamborghini designer Gianpaolo Dallara to produce the chassis for his following project, the mid-engine supercar by the name of Pantera. Ford Motor Company was DeTomaso's partner at the time of the Pantera's introduction in 1971. Just like the earlier Mangusta, the Pantera relied on a Ford V8 power plant mated to a ZF all-synchro five-speed transaxle. DeTomaso's relationship with the Ford Motor Company led to an arrangement whereby the Pantera was distributed through select Lincoln-Mercury dealerships in the USA until the 1974 when Ford and DeTomaso decided to part ways. After this point, DeTomaso continued to sell the Pantera in Europe. For the 1974 model year Ford offered 137 US spec GTS to the market (97 to the 49 states and 40 re-documented as 1973 models for California). Due to the falling out between Ford and DeTomaso all references to DeTomaso were removed from the coach of the US spec GTS and replaced with either GTS or Ghia badges.This 1974 DeTomaso Pantera GTS is just one of just 97 produced for the U.S.-market and has just 9,012 original miles on the odometer. The 351ci Cleveland Ford V8 produces 266 HP and 301 lb-ft of torque with single 4-barrel carburetor backed by a ZF 5-speed manual transmission. Independent unequal length A-arm suspension with front and rear anti-sway bars works with rack-and-pinion steering for supercar-level road control. American-market Pantera GTS left DeTomaso with a blacked-out hood and deck lid, black anodized trim, special exhaust tips, rivet-mount fender flares, sport steering wheel and rocker-panel graphics. A removable rear-window louver accents the black and red paint on the monocoque body. Electric windows and air conditioning add luxury to sport in the '70s-perfect interior, and a 200 MPH speedometer and 8,000 RPM tachometer are ready to gauge 6-second 0-60 MPH launches and the Pantera's 150 MPH top speed. The Pantera GTS rolls on Goodyear Arriva tires mounted on 15Ã8-inch rear and 15Ã7-inch front Campagnolo magnesium wheels with a spare in its factory-issue location. This 1972 Pantera has been well maintained and kept throughout the years and is an attention grabber wherever it may pull up. This example has been repainted in a deep maroon that shows some slight wear in a few areas but is in overall great condition that still shines well. The interior has kept its originality and has held its integrity well, the odometer reads 48,000 miles but has definitely lived a loved life! The correct 351 Cleveland V8 remains as the 300 HP powerplant and is still shifted by the 5 speed ZF transaxle manual transmission.
