1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ Delivered New to Rinaldo ParmigianiWhen, in 1956, a wrecked Giulietta Sprint Veloce was taken to Elio Zagato for new coachwork, a remarkable transformation took place. By fitting a lighter, more aerodynamic body to the already potent Veloce foundation, Zagato created a Giulietta with the potential to rival GT cars of far greater displacement. Other Sprint Veloce owners soon followed suit and, after witnessing the performance attained by these re-bodied Giuliettas (now referred to as SVZs), Alfa Romeo contracted Carrozzeria Zagato to build a limited run of factory-sanctioned racing cars. A true dual-purpose competition gran turismo, the resulting Giulietta Sprint Zagato, or SZ, was built on a short-wheelbase chassis and featured powerful finned aluminum drum brakes, a five-speed gearbox, large-capacity fuel tank, and the high-performance tipo AR00120 engine. In typical Zagato fashion, the SZs coachwork was lightweight and minimal to the extreme, with smooth organic lines, thin aluminum panels, Plexiglas windows, and virtually no ornamentation. The cockpit was businesslike, with two supportive tube-frame seats, simple vinyl upholstery, and a three-gauge instrument binnacle. Distinguished by its special type number (AR10126), the Giulietta SZ was first delivered to customers in late 1960 and immediately dominated the 1300 GT class in endurance events, circuit races, and hill climbs. Wins were innumerable and the car soon developed a reputation as a giant killer. In total, just 200 examples of the original SZ were built, including 30 examples of the updated SZ Coda Tronca, identifiable by its long-nose, Kamm-tail coachwork. The final evolution of the racing Giulietta and the direct predecessor to the Giulia TZ, the Sprint Zagato was the premier small-displacement GT car of the early 1960s, and today is among the top tier of collectible Alfa Romeos. According to Angelo Tito Anselmis definitive book, Alfa Romeo Giulietta, this SZ, chassis 00033, was originally finished in gray and sold new, on August 25, 1960, to Rinaldo Parmigiani of La Spezia, Italy. An amateur racing driver, Parmigiani began his career in the early 1950s. Beginning in 1956, he passed through a succession of Alfa Romeos, which he campaigned at major events like the Mille Miglia, Coppa Inter-Europa, and Giro di Sicilia. His first known outing in this Sprint Zagato took place on August 15, 1961, at the 4 Hours of Pescara. Entered under the Scuderia SantAmbroeus banner, the SZ was driven by Parmigiani and Sergio Pedretti, better known by his nom de course Kim, to a respectable 7th in Class and 19th Overall. The cars last known race was at the Coppa Inter-Europa at Monza, held on September 10, 1961. One of six Scuderia SantAmbroeus entrants, including five Alfa Romeos and one Fiat-Abarth, Parmigiani drove his SZ to 4th in Class and 6th Overall. Throughout the 1960s and 1970s, the Alfa Romeo remained in Italy, where it was later repainted red and fitted with a 1750 GT Veloce engine (tipo AR00548). By 1978, the noted Bergamo-based collector Corrado Cupellini had acquired the car and registered it in Lucca as LU 124954. Later that year, the SZ was sold to Alfa Romeo specialist Marvin Collins of El Cerrito, California, and shipped to San Francisco. Mr. Collins sold the car to Jerry Gamez of Castro Valley, California, who prepared the SZ for a return to the track and entered it in the 1980 Monterey Historic Automobile Races at Laguna Seca. In 1984, Mr. Gamez sold the Alfa Romeo to a private collector in San Antonio, Texas, whose stable included many iconic postwar European sports cars. This SZ has not been seen in public in over 30 years, and its appearance has changed little since arriving in the US over four decades ago. Having been parked for many years, mechanical attention will be required prior to use; however, the cosmetic condition is such that, for some collectors, the SZ could be recommissioned and maintained visually, as is. Significantly, the all-important stamped Zagato body number (441) has been located in several areas around the car. Accompanying the sale is a file of documentation that includes original maritime shipping paperwork from 1978, Italian and California registration records, and various service invoices from Jeremiah Browns Mouse Engineering in Oakland, California, and Fredz Autogofast in Berkeley, California.  If only for its status as one of the most successful Italian GT cars of the early 1960s, the Giulietta SZ is among the most collectible and historically significant postwar Alfa Romeos. For decades, knowledgeable collectors have admired the special qualities of these rare Zagato-bodied Giuliettas their lively performance, highly individual character, and thoroughbred competition bloodline. 1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta 750 Spider Veloce, Pinin FarinaChassis No. AR1495F07582Engine No. *number in the description*95- Documented high-performance Veloce model.- One of 2,796 Veloce Spiders produced between 1956 and 1961.- Photo documented restoration by MAS Restorations, Las Vegas, Nevada.- Concours level restoration to original specs and colors. Alfa Romeo, proving that more power is a good thing, offered the Giulietta Spider Veloce beginning with the 1956 model year. Veloce, appropriately, translates to fast in Italian. The Type 750F engine was enhanced to 90hp (10 more than standard models) thanks to an updated twin choke Weber 40 DCOE2 carburetor, 9:1 compression, new design cylinder head, 9mm valve stems, and bigger diameter main journals on the crankshaft. A limited number, with chassis numbers from AR1495F07501 to AR1495F07612, were sent to the U.S. in 1960, including this example. In total, Alfa Romeo built 14,300 Giulietta Spiders and an additional 2,796 Veloce Spiders between 1956 and 1961. A 109mph top speed was claimed by the factory. Alfa Romeo factory records indicate Chassis No. 07582 to be configured as a left-hand drive Spider in full 750F Veloce trim. It was completed on March 7, 1960 and dispatched to Hoffman Motor Car Co. in New York, New York. While the original owner remains unknown, it was acquired in January 1962 by legendary Orlando, Florida radio DJ, William Weird Beard Vermillion, Jr. While working at WLOF AM radio in the 1960's and 1970's, Vermillion is credited for promoting and popularizing Van Morrison's Brown-Eyed Girl single to the Top-40 list in 1967. Copies of his initial temporary registration from 1962 along with various Florida registrations remain with the car.It was purchased by a subsequent owner in 2009 having been in long-term storage. Despite being complete, the car was in need of restoration. It was entrusted to MAS Restorations of Las Vegas, Nevada, which over the next five years, completed a concours level restoration to exceptional standards. Taken down to bare metal, the body was refinished in epoxy primer on top of which the original Rosso Chiaro color in single-stage urethane paint was applied. The interior was correctly reupholstered in its original colors of cream leather with red piping and red carpets using the originals as patterns to ensure authenticity. An in-dash Motorola AM radio and the original tools and books are included. Mechanically, the entire drivetrain was rebuilt - the top end by Norm Racing and the bottom end by Universal Automotive and Rebuilding; both in Las Vegas. A new Stayfast convertible top was installed as the finishing touch. The restoration is documented in 160 photographs along with another 100 photographs following the completion of work. Attesting to the quality of the restoration, the car was shown at the 2016 Red Rocks Concours d'Elegance where it received Top 10 of Show honors. In 2019 at the Alfa Romeo Owner's Club Cortile Della Corsa, the Spider earned a Certificate D'Oro with a score of 102.

Just out of long-term storage, a great project that comes largely complete with its engine, gearbox, chrome, soft-top frame, gas tank,and glass. It is missing one seat. Most of the major components appear to be there. Nice and straight body in primer. Pininfarina designed the first Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider in 1955 and it would be made, more or less in that form, until the arrival of the Duetto in 1966. Launched in 1957, the hotter Giulietta T.I.-or Turismo Internazionale-added increased compression and a twin-choke downdraught carburettor to the already potent 1,290-cc twin-cam four-cylinder engine. An additional 12 horsepower was the result, which enabled the attractive three-box saloon to hit a top speed of 154 km/h, astounding the gathered motoring press when it was first demonstrated at Monza.   This smartly finished example left Alfa Romeo's Portello works on 16 December 1957 as one of just 1,268 built during the first year of T.I. production, and was delivered to Forli, Italy on 28 December. Always popular with enthusiastic drivers, the Giulietta T.I. Berlina quickly made a name for itself in motorsport-a reputation that stayed with the model throughout its life. This particular car would eventually be prepared for historic racing in the 1990s and competed at tracks the length and breadth of Europe, from Vallelunga and Zandvoort to Donington Park. In 2000, the Alfa Romeo passed into the ownership of noted Swiss Alfa authority Conrad Waser, before being sold to former Renault F1 Sporting Director Jean Sage four years later. Sage immediately set to work improving the Giulietta, and while in his care the car was subject to more than â¬15,000 worth of improvements by marque specialist Autofficina Omega, including rebuilds of both the engine and gearbox. Invoices for work carried out are available to view on file, alongside older-style FIA and FFSA papers.   Well-presented and with previous competition history, this racy Alfa Romeo Giulietta T.I. Offered Without Reserve | â¬320,000 - â¬450,000 EUR   Offered from The Jody Scheckter Collection A rare example of Alfa Romeo's long-running creative partnership with legendary coachbuilder Zagato Raced in the 1961 and 1963 editions of the legendary Targa Florio race Multiple entrant into Italian hillclimbs from 1961 to 1963 Owned and raced in period by Ignazio Giunti, a future Scuderia Ferrari driver Restored to period specification as it ran in the 1961 Targa Florio Eligible for some of the finest motoring events around the world     Two of the greatest names in the Italian automotive industry, Alfa Romeo and Zagato, have thankfully enjoyed one of the most productive partnerships. Starting with pre-war coachbuilt bodies on cars like the 6C and 8C, Zagato's ability to produce high-quality lightweight designs meant that many their creations were involved in some of Alfa Romeo's greatest motorsport victories. This focus on competition continued after the war, with stunning creations such as the 1900 CSS, before the appearance of the Giulietta SZ. Based on Alfa Romeo's highly successful 1,300 cc four-cylinder model, this car would go on to dominate its class throughout Europe. Further iterations of the design appeared such as the Coda Tronca in order for the SZ to remain competitive at circuits such as Le Mans and the Targa Florio. Ultimately, this evolution would lead to the TZ1 and TZ2 models which many regard as one of the greatest cars produced by the Milanese manufacturer.   Reaching completion on 21 July 1960, this Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ was finished in Bianco and destined for Rome. With the Certificato Origine issued the following week, the car was first registered on the Roma targa 411242 on 3 August 1960 to an Enzo Buzzetti. The car was entered by Montegrappa into the 1961 edition of the legendary Targa Florio, and he co-drove with Renzo Sinibaldi with race number 34. The duo finished 7th in their class and 14th overall. The following month, on 14 May, Buzzetti raced at the Coppa Citta di Asiago, finishing 3rd in its class. In July, he raced at the Bolzano-Mendola and the Trento-Bondone, and finished 2nd-in-class at both events.   On 17 April 1962, Buzzetti parted ways with his SZ and sold the car to the second owner, Paolo Bulgari, who by June that year sold the Alfa Romeo to Nicoletta Giunti. His brother Ignazio raced in August 1962 at the Trofeo Michelangeli, finishing 1st in class-he would later go on to drive for the legendary Scuderia Ferrari and this SZ was one of the cars that gave him his early break in motorsport. On 2 September, Ignazio drove again at the Coppa Gallenga, taking home a 3rd-in-class result. In March 1963, Ignazio took home a 2nd-in-class and 7th overall result at the Trofeo Franco Venturi. At the Coppa Primavera in Salerno, he failed to finish the race, which unfortunately was a result mirrored when he entered and drove at the 1963 Targa Florio, with Paolo Datti as his co-driver.   Following its second appearance at the Targa Florio, Giunti sold the SZ to Gianfranco Perrotti in June 1963. The car was owned in 1965 by Luca Tanzi, who retained this Alfa Romeo for an expended spell before parting ways in December 1987, having sold to Sebastiano Tulli. Remaining with Tulli for a decade, the cars final Italian owner, Giovanni Bartoli, took possession in May 1997. Exported in November 2000, this Alfa Romeo was shipped to the UK for renowned-restorer Dick Crosthwaite who kept it for a few years before passing ownership to James Wiseman. An enthusiastic gentleman driver, Wiseman competed at the Goodwood Revival and many other historic races over several years before selling the SZ to Jody Scheckter in 2015. Wishing to return this historic Alfa Romeo to its period appearance, Scheckter had it restored back to its 1961 specification.  Offered with an Alfa Romeo Classiche certificate, FIA Historic Technical Papers papers from 1997, various historic photos, as well as copies of the Estratto Cronologico, this 1960 Alfa Romeo SZ truly is a special car. With its fascinating known history from new including podium finishes, outright victories, and two entries into the legendary Targo Florio (one with a future Scuderia Ferrari driver), this Alfa Romeo is highly eligible for a host of historic motor racing events.
