1964 Aston Martin DB5

Greetings!
My name is Alec Cartio and I'm a true passionate and enthusiast car guy, as well as a vehicle presenter. I've also been a music video and commercial film director for 22 years. I have had the pleasure of owning and representing hundreds of incredible and beautiful cars, classics and modern classics. Although I represent private owners, as well as dealers, I'm a private entity myself and own a dozen various cars. I completely understand the enthusiast car world and ownership. I ensure that any car I send to a new custodian is 100% turn-key and of full satisfaction, just the way I would want my cars to be sold to me. This 1964 Aston Martin DB5 coupe is no exception and tops the charts of all my presentations to date. My partners and I at Rapley Classic Cars, Mr. Daniel Rapley whom is a dear friend as well as a car enthusiast, are very proud to be presenting this incredible car to its future custodian and care taker. We have shot three presentation films and hundreds of high quality artistic and accurately represented photos of this lovely car. Below, please see any info and history on this car and I look forward to hearing from you with any interest in it.

This 1964 Aston Martin DB5 is one of 35 factory air conditioned cars, a left-hand-drive example that was completed on June 16, 1964 and delivered to Peter Satori Company, a dealership in Pasadena, California. Chassis 1612/L was refinished with a color change to its current metallic green before being sold by the Fine Car Store of San Diego in the mid-1980s, remained with a father and son in Southern California for the following 30 years, changed hands in 2017, and was acquired by its current owner in 2019. Power is from a numbers-matching 4.0-liter DOHC inline-six mated to a ZF five-speed manual transmission and a factory-optional 3.77:1 limited-slip differential. Additional equipment consists of air conditioning, Selectaride adjustable rear shock absorbers, chrome 15” wire wheels, and a steering column spacer. A rebuilt cylinder head was fitted in 2017 along with a replacement air conditioning compressor, timing components, seals, clutch hydraulic cylinders, tires, and pinion seal. Service in the last five months included refreshment of the underhood paint and black leather-upholstered seats as well as exhaust system repairs, replacement of the battery, and an oil change. This DB5 is offered on consignment by a Connecticut dealer, who is being represented by the seller, and comes with a jack, a knock-off hammer, a British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate, and a clean New York title.

The DB5 was introduced in September 1963 as a higher-powered successor to the Series V variant of the DB4, from which it carried over an exterior design styled by Carrozzeria Touring. The previous car’s superleggera construction, incorporating aluminum body panels over a steel chassis with tubular framework, was also brought forward. Like the late DB4, the DB5 featured a body lengthened to 15 feet along with a low-profile hood scoop and a seven-bar grille, while also adopting the faired-in headlights of the DB4GT and Vantage.

This example left the factory finished in Sand according to the BMIHT certificate, and was refinished in its current dark metallic green prior to the mid-1980s. Cosmetic work carried out in January 2021 included installation of new Perspex headlight covers, dent removal, and paint correction followed by application of ceramic coating. A new trunk seal was fitted in late 2020.

Chromed 15” wire wheels with three-eared knock-off nuts are listed as factory equipment on the BMIHT certificate,. Pirelli Cinturato tires and replacement tubes were mounted in 2017, including on the matching spare housed in the trunk. Four-wheel Girling disc brakes are assisted by twin servos, and a brake fluid flush was performed in December 2020.

The cabin was configured in left-hand drive from the factory, and has been retrimmed in black leather with matching carpets in lieu of its original green upholstery. Power windows were standard equipment, and Normalair air conditioning is noted among factory options. A York compressor and rebuilt receiver drier were installed in 2017, and the system was recharged with R134a refrigerant in December 2020. The reclining front seats were refreshed with new back foam and re-dyed leather by Danbury Upholstery in Connecticut, and new rubber pads and gaiters were also fitted to the brake and clutch pedals.

The wood-rimmed steering wheel is mounted to a column with a factory-equipped 2” spacer, and was fitted with a new horn button in late 2020. Smiths instrumentation includes a 180-mph speedometer and a tachometer in addition to gauges monitoring oil pressure and temperature, amperage, fuel level, and coolant temperature. A knob to the driver’s right allows adjustment of rear shock absorber firmness.

The 4.0-liter straight-six used in the DB5 was an evolution of the all-aluminum, dual-overhead-camshaft engine design developed by Tadek Marek for the DB4. Standard features included an oil cooler, an alternator, and triple SU HD8 carburetors drawing from twin fuel tanks. This example was fitted with a rebuilt cylinder head during the 2017 refreshment, which also included replacement of the timing components and carburetor jets in addition to a water pump rebuild.

Engine block stamp 400/1621 matches the number listed on the BMIHT certificate and chassis tag, which is pictured in the gallery along with additional markings. Service in 2020 included correction of oil and exhaust leaks, replacement of the battery, a fuel sender rebuild, and refinishing the underside of the hood. A November 2020 compression test yielded results of 125-130 psi across all six cylinders.
The ZF five-speed manual transmission came paired with a 3.77:1 Powr-Lok limited-slip differential from the factory. The clutch master and slave cylinders were replaced in 2017, as was the rear axle pinion seal. The independent front suspension incorporates double wishbones with coil springs, telescopic shock absorbers, and an anti-roll bar, while the coil-sprung solid rear axle features a Watts linkage, trailing arms, and Armstrong lever-arm dampers, the latter of which feature optional electric adjustment.

The BMIHT certificate lists the original colors and equipment numbers as well as production dates and delivery to Peter Satori Company. Invoices from the 2017 refreshment at Steel Wings in Ivyland, Pennsylvania are shown in the gallery below, as are those from the 2020-2021 work. A two-part historical and driving video feature is provided below. Also featured below is a walk-around video, which includes footage of a cold start.
