To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION at RM Sothebys' Cliveden House event, 8 July 2025. rn?140,000 - ?200,000 GBP rnrnSuperbly crafted Danish coachwork with wonderful fine detailsrnBody shown at Forum Copenhagen in 1927rnWell-preserved older restoration, with mechanical work by Jonathan HarleyrnNicely maintained and regularly enjoyed in present ownershiprn rnrnBelieved to be the only example of Danish coachwork mounted to a Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost, this very attractive Drophead Coupe was crafted in 1927 by Dansk Karosseri Fabrik. It was originally fitted to the 1915-constructed chassis, number 5CB, shown at Forum Copenhagen that year, as documented by a photograph included within the history file. Dansk Karosseri Fabrik was Denmark's most respected and active coachbuilder, working on virtually every significant European chassis of the era between 1918 and 1947, and was known for superb craftsmanship and engineering.rnrnUnusually well-proportioned for a two-door body on the Silver Ghost, the Dansk drophead was handsomely and thoughtfully drawn. It featured a well-engineered hood and wind-up windows providing all-weather comfort, and a spacious interior and dickie seat, as well as Bleriot headlamps and wheel discs. It was referred to in the somewhat awkward parlance of the time as a doctor's coupe, but has always been in its present drophead configuration.rnrnThe body was later relocated in the 1970s to the present chassis, numbered 49RE. Originally delivered to John W Potter, scion to a fortune that had been made brokering clipper ships to the Chinese tea trade. Build sheets for the chassis are included in the file, which note its original specification including nickel trimmed hardware. In this form it was sold in 1982 in unrestored condition. In subsequent ownership, it was extensively mechanically restored by noted Silver Ghost authority and specialist Jonathan Harley. A six-year rebuild was completed to his usual high standards, and the car was also reunited with its original registration.rnrnPart of The British Icons Collection since 2010, the car has been much-enjoyed by its Danish-born caretakers for its local heritage, and has been used for numerous extended tours and rallies both in Denmark and elsewhere over the years. During this time, it has been properly upkept to a high standard as reflected in invoices within the file, including with noted marque specialist P&A Wood. To Be OFFERED AT AUCTION at RM Sothebys' Cliveden House event, 8 July 2025. rn?350,000 - ?450,000 GBP rnrnOffered from over 46 years of continuous enthusiast ownershiprnAn exceptional Silver Ghost, in one of the most sought-after specificationsrnAuthentic Alpine Eagle example, with its original, very rakish open coachwork rnMeticulously maintained by noted marque specialists and regularly used for extended toursrnImportant, beautiful, authentic, and indisputably properrn rnrnPlease note this car is titled as 1921. rnrnRolls-Royce's Works entrants in the 1913 Alpine Trial were a team of specially prepared cars, built to an enhanced specification with greater ground clearance, 22-inch radiators, enlarged fuel tanks, and engines with high-compression pistons, mated to four-speed gearboxes. The success of these cars led to the popularity of the same specification intended for more sporting-minded owners and backed by advanced features such as concentric brakes, a starting carburettor, and genuine Rolls-Royce equipment including a self-starter. The build record for chassis number 58UE, offered here, specifically notes chassis to be built for speed, with the equipment of a High Speed Alpine Eagle engine, light springing, and a lowered D-position steering column, while the body crafted by Barker was a lightweight two-door tourer with concealed hinges and no exterior door handles. Very few Silver Ghosts of any era were as dramatic and rakish; fewer still began life so fortuitously, and have survived the passing century so intact.rnrnThe car was originally delivered to cotton manufacturer T A Stuttard at his home, Brae Cottage-familiar to Rolls-Royce enthusiasts as the former home of Sir F Henry Royce himself-in front of which the Silver Ghost was pictured in period. It is believed to have covered only 10,000 miles by 1951. It is subsequently recorded as having been owned by Rex Broughton of Cheshire, who recorded it with the American Rolls-Royce Owners' Club from 1969 to 1972, then in 1977 was acquired by The British Icons Collection. At that time, noted Silver Ghost technician Jonathan Harley wrote of it that the car is completely authentic to all intents and purposes. The coachwork is original and in excellent condition. There does not appear to be any modifications carried out on any part of the coachwork or chassis.58UE stands head and shoulders above most of its vintage brethren and as an investment, must rank with the best pre-World War I Silver Ghosts extant. rnrnUndoubtedly the meticulous consigning owner agreed, as for the last 46 years the car has been driven with pride and dependability extensively all over the world, covering around 35,000 miles while remaining, as it sits today, largely original, unrestored, and remarkably preserved. It has covered extended distances in both Europe and the United States, and participated in the 2013 Alpine Rally, celebrating the 100th anniversary of the event that birthed its design.
