V-12 enginernBenefits from well-maintained 1990s restorationrnBeautifully presented example of the Model 1507 Twelvern rnrnPackard introduced several important advances in 1937, including front independent suspension and hydraulic brakes. Three different wheelbase lengths were offered for the Twelve chassis in 1937, with the Model 1507 adding seven inches to the shortest wheelbase. Eight different coachwork styles were available for the Model 1507, including the rare three-window 2/4-passenger coupe.rnrnChassis number 1038 214 is believed to be one of fewer than 50 examples of a 15th Series Twelve chassis to be mounted with the factory's sporty 2/4-passenger coupe coachwork, with very few known to have survived. Equipped with a rumble seat, Trippe lights, radio, and a deluxe heater with defroster, the Packard was sold new by the Packard Motor Company of Delaware to Wilmington resident William Fenn, a contractor for DuPont. In 1939, the Twelve passed to Frank Ewing, and he parked the car circa 1941 for a prolonged period of storage that lasted until July 1970, accounting for nearly 30 years of uninterrupted preservation.rn rnNext acquired by Harold and Betty Bujwit of Lowell, Indiana, the three decades-long slumber led to the Packard needing some restorative attention. By 1984 the Twelve was sold to Jeff Peace of Lafayette, Indiana, and five years later he sourced new gears from the legendary Hill and Vaughn for a rebuild of the rear end. The final drive ratio was modified to 3.58:1 to result in a greater top speed, and during subsequent testing the car exceeded 71 mph-showing an improvement of 11 mph.rnrnIn 1989 the Model 1507 was purchased by Chad and Barbara Hunt of Saratoga, California, who reportedly commissioned a body-off restoration and engine rebuild, after which the car won first prize at a Packard National Meet. The car is believed to have passed to two additional owners before being acquired in 2018 by a Connecticut-based enthusiast who retained marque specialist Parker's Packards in late 2020 for mechanical freshening, which included a rebuild of the front brakes and shock absorbers. The Twelve has since been driven on a small handful of touring events. rnrnBelieved to have accrued roughly 1,000 miles since its 1990s restoration while powered by its rebuilt, smooth-running 473 cubic-inch V-12 engine, this handsome Packard is an ideal candidate for CARavan tours, having been designated as a Classic Car Club of America Full Classic. The new engine, with its 67-degree vee, displaced 445 cubic inches, just 20 more than its 1920s namesake, but developed 75 percent more power. In 1933 the name was changed to simply Packard Twelve, and two years later displacement rose to 473.3 cubic inches, making 175 horsepower with an immense amount of torque, enabling smooth acceleration for even the heaviest custom bodywork. rnrnFor 1937, the Twelve was given a coil-sprung, independent front suspension and hydraulic brakes. It is considered by many to be one of the finest automobiles produced by Packard and one of the most significant creations of the classic car era. The long and flowing front hood hid the potent V-12 that was refined, powerful, smooth, and quiet. With a limited production run from 1933 to 1939 with approximately 35,000 examples produced, all Twelves are enjoyable, exclusive automobiles. When fitted with rarely seen Convertible Victoria coachwork, like the example offered here, it becomes something very special indeed.rnrnThis lovely 1937 Packard Twelve Convertible Victoria is one of just a handful known to exist. Sympathetically restored in the 1970s, it received a National First Prize in 1971 from the Antique Automobile Club of America. Since then, it has been fitted with useful and tasteful upgrades that make for an enhanced driving and touring experience. These upgrades include a 12-volt electrical system, an air-conditioning system hidden under the dash, a stereo system, and a rear axle ratio allowing for higher speeds at lower rpms. Safety is enhanced by a set of accessory rear-view mirrors, seat belts, and turn signals, enabling this impressive automobile to be used as it was intended, on the great American road.rnrnThe car is said to be mechanically sound and has been extensively toured in the past, to include an Upper Midwest Region Classic Car Club of America tour. It is said to have been a neighborhood favorite that ferried numerous friends and family to local restaurants, as well as brides and grooms from churches to reception halls.rnrnThe restoration has mellowed a bit, showing a lovely patina that encourages one to get in and drive.
