Wilhelm Maybachs automotive beginnings began as early as 1885 when, together with Gottlieb Daimler, he invented the so-called grandfather clock. The engine that was used in the Patent Motorwagen, among other things.

 

In 1901, he developed the Mercedes 35 hp, which is considered the first real automobile.

 

After Wilhelm Maybach retired, his son Karl continued his lifes work and established Maybach as the quality standard in the automobile sector.

 

The engines in particular were renowned for their legendary reliability.

 

Maybach also produced the aircraft engines for the Zeppelin airships, as well as various engines for aircraft, tanks, ships and trains.

 

All German tracked vehicles in the Second World War ran with Maybach engines and transmissions.

 

Our SW38 (SW for Schwingachswagen, 38 for 3.8 l capacity) was delivered to its first owner, the director of a large Swiss insurance company, in Dietlikon in 1937.

 

Due to an accident in the early 1940s, the chassis was replaced by Maybach with a new original frame. The body was repaired at Spohn in Ravensburg.

 

The SW38 remained in Switzerland until at least the 1960s.

 

Later it was part of the legendary Blackhawk Collection in California.

 

In terms of technology and luxury, Maybach was always superior to its direct competitors Mercedes and Horch.
