When the C4 came out in 1984, it had 250bhp. The C5 in 1997 had 345bhp. The C6 in 2004 had 400bhp. By the time the C7 came out in 2013 it had 455bhp. But those of course were the base motors, things only got wilder from there. The 'Vette here is a C7 Z06 that is, for all intents and purposes, the prior iteration of the ZR1. It produces 650bhp, enough to move the coupe from 0-60mph in only 3.3 seconds. If you happen to find yourself merging onto the tollway between Austin and San Antonio, it'll take you about six seconds to get from a standstill past the 85mph speed limit. Keep the foot planted and you'll be looking forward to getting a ticket for doing 100mph over that. You might notice that this specific Corvette isn't a standard example. This extremely limited example is known as the Z06 C7.R Edition that features Corvette Racing Yellow Tintcoat paint &#40;a new color for 2016 and one of two colors offered in the package&#8212;the other being Black&#41;, C7.R Edition graphics, black rims with yellow accent stripes, Competition Sport Seats with carbon accents, steering wheel, and shifter all finished in Jet Black leather with sueded microfiber accents, special edition kickplates, and of course the Z06 performance package. The window sticker on the car comes out to north of $120,000 due to the amount of added features this model carries. As a homage to the successful C7.R racecar, Chevrolet decided to build this special edition and load it up with many more features than the standard model, while giving it exclusive extras only to be found on the C7.R. This particular car comes equipped with the flagship 3LZ premium package, along with the C7.R package &#40;nearly $25,000 alone&#41; which includes the Z07 performance package, carbon ceramic Brembo brakes and finally the 8-Speed Automatic with paddle shifters. And with a lap time of 6min 47sec it's quicker round the N&#252;rburgring Nordschleife than any other production car, including the Lamborghini Huracan Performante and Porsche's own 918 Spyder hypercar.' &#8211; CAR magazine on the Porsche 911 Type 991 GT2 RS in November 2017. Like its legendary Carrera RS forebearer of 1973, the Porsche 911 GT2 was bred directly from motorsport. The car takes its name from the FIA's now-defunct GT2 category of production sports car racing, for which the model was originally homologated, and has been produced in a variety of versions since its introduction in 1993 on the Type 993 platform. Even with the GT2 racing category long gone, the Porsche 911 GT2 lives on as the bad boy of the 911 range. With 993, 996, and 997 versions of the GT2 &#40;with the even sharper RS version coming in 2010&#41; each one-upping the last in terms of performance, Porsche had their work cut out to turn the new 991 into a worthy successor. In June 2017 the latest iteration of the GT2 RS arrived on the Type 991 platform, officially launched at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The 991 GT2 RS is based on the 911 Turbo, and powered by a heavily reworked version of the Turbo S's 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged flat-six engine. Rated at a stonking 691bhp, it is the most powerful production 911 ever built. The engine was paired with a seven-speed PDK transmission, and the Turbo's AWD system was ditched for rear-drive only, further reducing weight. Unusually, the Type 991 version has a roof made of magnesium, while the front bonnet, front/rear wings, and boot lid are carbon-fiber. Lightweight polyurethane is used for the front and rear aprons, the exhaust system is titanium, and the GT2 RS has a claimed wet weight of just 1,470kg &#40;3,241lb&#41;. Porsche claims that the GT2 RS will accelerate from 0-97km/h &#40;0-60mph&#41; in 2.7 seconds on its way to a top speed of 340km/h &#40;211mph&#41;. These design touch points would permeate his work at the marque that bore his name for the next 12 years. 'W.O.', did nothing in half measure. Almost immediately successful at building racing cars with success at the 1922 Indianapolis 500, to participating in the inaugural race at Lemans in 1924. A race which Bentley would dominate, winning in 1927,1928, 1929, and 1930. In 1919 when WO first put pen to paper designing his 3-liter, it bore striking resemblance to an aero-engine as it was completely dual redundant, two magnetos, twin spark, gear driven overhead cam with 4 valves per cylinder and incredible torque emanating from its under square bore of 80mm and stroke of 149mm. As the company and its successes grew so did the displacement of the engines on offer. Initially with a growth of the 3-liter to 4&#189;-liters, to a 6&#189;-liter 6 cylinder with the final iteration of the venerable 8-liter. While the 4 cylinder and later 6 cylinder Bentleys were extremely capable as raceabouts with wildly popular Weyman fabric bodies, the call for a more luxurious chassis that could be fitted with all the appointments of luxury that one would require with the speed that was expected of a Bentley became apparent in 1930. The Eight Liter debuted at the 1930 London Motor Show, it was aimed squarely at the Phantom II, Bugatti Royale and the Hispano-Suiza H6. Upon its release it became the largest displacement car built in England. Early tests by motoring journalists were filled with little but praise. W.O. had overachieved on his goal of 'I have wanted to produce a dead silent 100mph car, and now I think we have done it.' Many examples with full saloon coachwork were clocked well in excess of 115mph. The massive chassis frame likewise was entirely new, being of the 'double drop' design that enabled overall height to be reduced and the center of gravity lowered, these aims also dictating the use of a hypoid-bevel rear axle. Seven tubular cross members resulted in a much stronger and less flexible frame than hitherto, which was available in a choice of two wheelbases: 12' or 13'. Revised suspension incorporating longer road springs, out-rigged at the rear, together with Bentley & Draper shock absorbers, made for increased smoothness and stability, both vital considerations when designing a large and weighty vehicle capable of three-figure speeds. The Eight Liter's steering and braking systems also featured numerous detail improvements. However, only 100 examples would be built prior to the company falling into bankruptcy in 1931. Rolls-Royce would step in and 'save' Bentley, ceasing production of the Eight Liter and destroying the casting molds while disposing of all spare parts. This car was a formidable contender in its day and remains an amazing survivor as an intact racecar. Despite considerable success in the 1970s at Le Mans, Daytona, Sebring and the N&#252;rburgring with the 935, Porsche abandoned its former track titan for the 956, leaving independent race teams to take up the gauntlet and continue the legacy of the 935. The charismatic and eclectic Bob Akin raced a couple of iterations of the 935, including a K3, in 1982 and 1983 with reasonable success. Eventually, however, he turned to Dave Klym of Fabcar in Tucker, Georgia, to build the ultimate 935 concept&#8212;a contender that adhered to the new Class 2 IMSA weight restriction of 2,060lbs, but could meet the rigors of top-level competition. Christened the 935/84, the new concept was based around the mechanicals of the wreckage of Derek Bell's 935 L1, with modifications that shaved 100lbs off aeroquip lines alone and became one of the fastest GTP cars on track in 1983-1984. Akin's new 935/84 used a lightweight space frame which significantly reduced overall weight compared to the K3 and met the IMSA minimum weight limit. It employed standard K3 suspension in the rear and 935 Moby Dick suspension in the front. It was powered by the standard 3.2 liter, twin plug, twin turbo engine used on the K3. Meanwhile, the original aluminum Kremer K4 body was reworked and then remolded in fiber-glass. The day of reckoning came in November 1983, at the Daytona 3 Hour Finale where the 935/84, wearing its highly-recognizable Coca-Cola livery, qualified third, beat all the other 935 contenders, including the K3s, and finished second overall on the lead lap. In 1984, with fellow drivers John O'Steen, Bobby Rahal and Hans Stuck, the Akin 935/84 won excellent grid positions for many of the major races, including third at Sebring, where it also achieved its best finish in fifth, amidst a competitive field. With a newfound recognition that he could be a serious contender on the international circuit, Akin acquired a Porsche 962, which became his premium seat. Meanwhile, the 935/84 was entered in the Daytona 24 Hour endurance race wearing its silver Polo Ralph Lauren livery and driven by Jim Mullen, Kees Nierop, and Ray McIntyre. The Porsche 935 finished in fifth overall, just two laps behind Akin and Stuck in their factory new 962. The swansong for the 935/84 came at the 1986 Sebring 12 Hours, driven by Jerry Kendall, who crashed out and DNF. Bob Akin took first overall in his 962, followed by two other Porsche 962s, finally bringing the 935/84 to the finale of its in-period racing career. In 2007 this special Akin racer was restored by marque specialists and went on to race in various historic events, including the Monterey Historic Races of 2008 and 2009. The sobriety of shape and refined elegance of line exuded by the Europa were fully confirmed by Pinin Farina in later Ferrari GTs, and design cues created by the Ferrari-Pinin Farina partnership during this time, like the long, low hood and oval radiator, continue to appear on Ferrari models of the present day. It was this design that has, for decades, embodied the spirit of cruising through the French Riviera, cocooning occupants and luggage in luxury while effortlessly eating up miles. First seen at the Paris Auto Salon the following year, in 1954, the new second series Europa GT looked quite similar to the original Europa, but in reality, the GT was a car with a wealth of new features. The original Colombo-designed short block engine had been brought up to 220bhp at a screaming 6,600rpm through development in the competition-derived 250 Mille Miglia. Used in the new Europa GT it allowed for a shorter wheelbase, which in turn brought down weight by approximately 10%, and added nearly ten miles per hour to the top speed. Perhaps the most desirable upgrade to the Europa GT was the reworked suspension of the GT, now featuring independent coil-sprung suspension with double wishbones up front, and only fitted to the final few production cars. This made for superb handling, with excellent road holding, cornering ability and ride quality. Fewer than 15 of the Europa GTs were fitted with this advanced suspension. Huge Alfin brake drums were similar to the ones later fitted to Ferrari's competition 250 Tour de France, and offered very capable stopping power. The Europa GT was indeed the total package. THE CAR OFFERED As one of the rare, desirable, stunningly beautiful Europa GTs by Pinin Farina, chassis no. 0427 GT claims exceptional pedigree with both period racing history and as a motor show car when new. A period favorite of celebrities, it ranks today among the most coveted sports cars ever produced and is a benchmark collectible automobile. The 300SL Coupe was the direct descendant of Mercedes-Benz' Le Mans W194 competition coupe, conceived in 1952 to wrest the World Sportscar Championship from Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, and Lancia, which were dominating post-war endurance racing. Mercedes- Benz historian W. Robert Nitzke writes that company management wanted to jump back into Grand Prix racing, where it had been so successful before the war, but lacked the time and resources to develop a new single seater for the 1954 season. Instead, Chief Engineer Fritz Nallinger suggested the company build a new sports car based on the robust SOHC inline six-cylinder engine from its luxurious 300 'Adenauer' series, but substantially modified. Because the engine and drivetrain were relatively heavy, the chassis would have to be extremely light. Test Department manager Rudolf Uhlenhaut sat down with construction engineer Joseph M&#252;ller and laid out an extremely light &#40;154 pounds&#41; and rigid lattice-work chassis capable of accommodating the big six. One major problem soon presented itself: there was no way to mount conventional doors without compromising the rigidity of the chassis. The solution was to cut the doors into the roof, but that meant hinging them from the top, thus giving birth to this car's timeless signature design feature. The 300SL's first racing trial was the 1952 Mille Miglia, where Kling finished second to Giovanni Bracco's open Ferrari, while Rudolf Caracciola was fourth, the two Gullwings being split by a Lancia. The third Coupe had gone off the road early in the grueling contest. Next came the Grand Prix of Berne, where a quartet of 300SLs took the start and swept the top three positions, Caracciola having crashed in what would prove to be his last race. The racing 300SLs spawned the legendary 8-cylinder 300SLR, which further dominated motorsport until the tragedy of the 1955 24 Hours of Le Mans, when Mercedes-Benz pulled out of global racing for decades. Max Hoffman, the influential and enterprising New York foreign car importer, is credited with urging Mercedes-Benz to build a production version of the 300SL racing car for the ravenous US market &#8211; which some say became the original 'supercar.' The 300SL Gullwing, in final form, was unveiled at the New York International Motor Sports Show in early February 1954, and actual production began that fall. Although new from stem to stern, the 456GT incorporated elements familiar to generations of Ferrari cognoscenti - front-mounted four-cam V12, rear transaxle, tubular steel spaceframe chassis and all-independent suspension - while making an appearance for the first time were electronically-controlled adaptive suspension and a six-speed gearbox. Essentially a de-tuned version of that powering the 550 and 575, the new 5.5-litre V12 unleashed no less than 442bhp at a lowly 6,250rpm yet remained smooth and tractable from idling speed to red-line thanks to its state-of-the-art engine management system. Audi's game-changing introduction of four-wheel drive brought immediate success: by 1984, the Ingolstadt-based team had secured three Drivers' and Manufacturers' World Championships. Yet, despite its traction advantage, the original quattro was heavy and nose-biased. To stay ahead of rising rivals&#8212;particularly Lancia's emerging Delta S4&#8212;Audi developed the Sport Quattro in 1984, with a shortened wheelbase and increased power. But it proved twitchy and difficult to manage. Even Stig Blomqvist, the eventual 1984 World Champion, avoided using it until his title was nearly secured. This led to the development of one of the most iconic and fearsome machines in motorsport history: the Audi Sport Quattro S1 E2 fire-spitting, wing-laden, 550-horsepower snow-shredding monster that inspired both awe and dread in even the toughest drivers. Strapping into it wasn't so much driving as it was hanging on for dear life. Audi didn't merely beat the competition with its revolutionary four-wheel-drive Quattro&#8212;it tore up the script and redefined the sport entirely. 'This is the car we forgot to build,' admitted Lancia's motorsport boss Cesare Fiorio after witnessing the Quattro's dominance, a moment that spurred the development of the Delta S4. He wasn't the only one playing catch-up, everyone else was suddenly behind. Determined to stay ahead, Audi's engineers&#8212;secretly guided by Ferdinand Pi&#235;ch&#8212;began crafting an even more extreme machine for the 1984 season: the Sport Quattro. Known as 'Shorty' for its dramatically shortened wheelbase &#40;by 320mm&#41;, it featured a lightweight carbon-Kevlar body and a potent all-aluminum five-cylinder engine pushing out 450 horsepower. Even seasoned professionals were shaken by its raw pace. 'Corners that used to be friendly suddenly scare you senseless,' recalled co-driver Christian Geistd&#246;rfer, describing how the Sport Quattro S1 transformed familiar stages into hostile terrain. 'You don't even recognize them&#8212;they've turned mean.' As Peugeot and Lancia closed the performance gap, Audi raised the bar again with the even more radical Sport Quattro S1 E2, launched in August 1985. Bristling with wings, ducts, and downforce, the E2's aggressive aerodynamics weren't just for show&#8212;they were designed to reduce lift over jumps and cool a relocated suite of radiators housed in the rear to improve balance. Delivered new to Audi Sport and prepared by Matter, Audi Sport Internal no. RE10 made its competition debut at the 1985 Lombard RAC Rally, driven by Hannu Mikkola and Arne Hertz. After a measured start &#40;9th in SS1&#41;, Mikkola surged to the lead by SS14, securing three stage wins before a mechanical failure on SS22 forced retirement. His early pace and dominance had been undeniable&#8212;until engine failure opened the door for Lancia's debuting Delta S4 to seize the win. Whereas at one time established manufacturers such as Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, and Aston Martin only had one another to worry about, they now have to contend with the likes of Koenigsegg, Spyker, Noble, Ultima and, of course, Pagani. Succeeding the Zonda, Pagani's latest offering is the Huayra, a mid-engined coupe hailed by Top Gear magazine as 'Hypercar of the Year 2012'. Horacio Pagani was no newcomer to the world of automotive engineering when he built the first Zonda in 1999, for the Argentine-born industrial design graduate had been working with Lamborghini since the mid-1980s, developing the Countach and Diablo road cars and assisting with the Italian manufacturer's Formula 1 engine program. The Zonda C12 debuted in coupe form at the 1999 Geneva Motor Show, its maker freely acknowledging that its styling had been inspired by the Mercedes-Benz Group C 'Silver Arrow' sports-racers. Mercedes-Benz's influence was more than just skin deep, for the German firm's AMG performance division was responsible for the Zonda's 6.0-liter V12 engine, which was mounted longitudinally amidships in the predominantly carbon fiber body tub. With some 408 horsepower on tap, the C12 was always going to be quick, but performance figures of 0-60mph in 4.2 seconds and 0-100 in 8.2 were simply staggering plus, of course, that all important 200mph &#40;or thereabouts&#41; top speed. Seemingly small from the outside yet endowed with a comfortable cabin, the C12 provided the basis for a host of derivatives, which emerged from Pagani's factory at San Cesario sul Panaro near Modena &#40;where else?&#41; in strictly limited numbers over the next 11 years. Its successor, the Huayra - named after a wind god of the South American Quechua people - made its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2011. Once again, AMG provided the engine, on this occasion a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 producing a mighty 620bhp and a titanic 737lb/ft of torque. A mind-boggling top speed of around 238mph &#40;383km/h&#41; was claimed for the Huayra, with the 0-60mph dash accomplished in a neck-snapping 2.8 seconds. Power reaches the road via a transversely-mounted Xtrac seven-speed sequential semi-automatic transmission, while the stupendous performance is kept in check by Brembo carbon ceramic disc brakes featuring four-pot calipers all round. It is worthwhile noting the Horacio Pagani chose to stick with a conventional single clutch rather than the more complex and heavier twin-clutch technology favored by some rivals, reasoning that the considerable saving in weight would result in a better-balanced car. The most significant difference between the Huayra and its Zonda predecessor is the former's use of active aerodynamic aids. These consist of variable front ride height and moveable spoilers at front and rear, their deployment being managed by a dedicated control unit to minimize drag or maximize downforce as required....
