Diminutive, affordable, practical, and easy to maintain yet also stylish, it was built on an all-new, rear-engine unibody chassis that was deceptively accommodating and featured independent suspension. Priced for the typical blue-collar salary, the Nuova 500 did not take off initially, overshadowed by the success of the larger Fiat 600 and hampered by an underpowered two-cylinder engine and Spartan interior with only two seats.  rnrnFiat corrected course quickly, unveiling an improved model mere months later at the 1957 Turin Motor Show in October. Called the Nuova 500 Normale, it featured a rear seat, chrome trim, improved window operation, more power, aluminum wheel covers, and the same low price of the launch model, which Fiat also kept in the lineup as the Nuova 500 Economica, but at an even lower price. rnrnIn 1958, Fiat added a more powerful Sport model that eschewed the open roof of the original design for improved rigidity. It would provide the basis for highly successful competition models, including ones famously modified by Abarth. The Nuova 500 evolved into the 500 D in 1960, featuring rear-hinged doors, a smaller roof opening, and a more potent engine with only marginally less displacement and power than the 500 Sport. For those set on the extended open roof of the original Nuova 500, Fiat created the 500 D Trasformabile, an example of which is offered here.rnrnSold new in Terni, Italy, in September 1964, it is said to have benefited from a restoration completed under prior ownership in 2016. The lovely combination of Verde Acquamarina over a red interior is well suited to the model's lovable lines. Lacking the capacity to meet the required 500 unit annual production requirement, Ferrari found an unlikely partner in Fiat, who committed to building the engines as well as developing a suitable grand touring car to house them.rnrnUnveiled at the 1966 Turin Motor Show in Pininfarina-bodied Spider form, the resulting Fiat Dino featured Ferrari's four-cam V-6 mounted in the front, delivering 160 factory-rated horsepower and graced by one of Pininfarina's most timeless designs with fluid lines, balanced proportions, and a purposeful Italian stance. A longer-wheelbase Bertone Coupe followed in 1967, but it was the launch of the 2400 series in 1969 that brought substantial mechanical advancements. Engine displacement increased to 2.4 liters, which brought horsepower to 180, while a new engine block design improved reliability. The 2400 also received a ZF five-speed gearbox, enlarged disc brakes, and independent rear suspension, vastly enhancing road manners. rnrnOne of approximately 425 examples equipped with the uprated 2.4-liter Ferrari V-6, this striking Fiat Dino 2400 Spider, chassis 1396, was delivered new to Italy, where it reportedly remained through at least the mid-1980s. Imported to the United States by the consignor in 2014, the car subsequently underwent a thorough multi-year restoration which included rebuilds of the engine, transmission, differential, suspension, and braking systems. Finished in its elegant factory-correct shade of Amaranto (162) over beige vinyl trim and fitted with Campagnolo alloy wheels, 1396 is further enhanced via a rare factory hardtop. The car is now accompanied by its Italian registration booklet, factory hardtop with stand, spare set of wheels with tires, and a file of restoration invoices.rnrnCombining Ferrari engineering with Turin craftsmanship, all cloaked in a timeless Pininfarina design, the Fiat Dino 2400 Spider remains a compelling and collectable Italian grand tourer, as exhilarating to drive as it is to behold.To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM Sotheby's website.
