The 74-78 MFI Euro Carrera was a limited edition series of approx. 1030 for 1974 that continued the same legendary performance of the Euro 73 RS Touring. Today according to Snodgrass, the Author of the well respected Carrera MFI book, there are less than 450 74 Carrera 2.7 MFI’s in his register. The Euro 74-78 Carrera MFI series was not imported to the USA since it could not pass the strict new USA EPA & DOT emissions & regulation requirements. Today however MFI’s before 1980 are allowed as is in the USA. Porsche continued to make this very popular Euro 2.7 hi-performance Carrera after 1973 with the same performance, low production ,HP, TQ, gearing, torque,& weight but with a better rear suspension & safety bumpers that were more than most needed or wanted but that some have grown to accept & even like.
 
 
The subject car is # 911 460 0561 & German delivered well optioned Grand Prix White Euro 2.7 liter 74 Carrera MFI that was produced in Oct/Nov of 73, & optioned with the very rare factory air conditioning that has now been upgraded to give modern cooling performance with out any visible change of the car from original. It comes with my near complete record of all work done since my purchase in 2008.

example since it spent most of its life in Museums. It was to be set up for Cheri & I for the purpose of enjoying the very popular sport of long distance vintage rally driving. Ie. Copper Sate 1000, The California Mille Miglia ,Colorado Grand, Montana Sky Rallye , Tour Auto of French & Spain or any of the many US East Coast touring events.
 
 
Though the car was a low mileage example of 59,000 miles in kilometers in preservation condition when I bought it in 2008, it still needed some work to bring it back to an as delivered 74 & spec car. It was also necessary to check all systems since it had been in a German museum for 14 years. 561 also had a early but minor accident in Switzerland involving the right front fender,luckily it only needed repair and the work was done under the strict Swiss laws governing auto repairs. Swiss DOT law also required redoing the weather proofing of the front half of the car during the repair since ,the 74 MFI bodies were not dipped as subsequent year models. We found some evidence that 561 had some graybeige under coating that Porsche used on the 73RS. Some later 74 MFI’s were only painted the color of the car on the underside & wheel wells.
 
 
Much of the post purchase restoration by the (present owner) was initially done due to the long museum storage in Germany and then again in Germany at Dr. Klaus Raeker’s Porsche Museum in Lemgo. We did all that was necessary to make the car road ready & pass the required strict German road inspection for registration. During that time we registered 561 in Dr Raekers name and it passed all the necessary inspections during that time.
 
 
Though the engine was at 60K miles and the compression test good across all (6) cylinders at purchase the engine was judged to be in good mid life condition. However I wanted the strong performance of a new 2.7 MFI before exporting it to the USA. 561 had a complete engine & trans rebuild by Master Carrera cup mechanics Karl Hloch Jr. & Sr. of Schorndorf,Germany that included new cup Mahle 2.8 (legal rebuild) pistons & cylinders, Case Line honing, and all known upgrades for the 2.7 were completed ie special studs & many recommended upgrades by Porsche for the 2.7.
Cost $25,000 plus. Receipts included.
 
 
After 561 came to the USA in 2015 it was registered in Montana. Upon arrival it underwent a complete restoration with the goal to win the Palos Verdes Concourse with a preservation philosophy & then used for special rally events.
 
 
Though out the work Spydersports & WBE managed using the Snodgrass Carrera MFI book to guide the restoration.
 
 
All systems were rebuilt or replaced NOS by Jim Rinker of Rinker Toys ; These systems were Brakes: all brakes which included new old stock Porsche Rotors,& the calipers were correctly re-plated & new street performance Ferredo pads were installed. A special clutch disc & sintered aluminum pressure plate was used like the 917. Suspension: NOS front Belstein struts & the much better Swiss delivered front & rear Belstein NOS gas shocks were installed. (It was necessary to changed the shocks & struts from the Konis’ type since all Swiss delivered cars had the superior gas Belsteins).
 
 
The Cooling System : For safety reasons the oil cooler was cleaned & pressure checked and new NOS oil fittings & correct new oil soft & hard lines were replaced. New gas lines were also installed. Most all under side parts were R & R’d ,cleaned & protected by original finish & or re-plated correctly. The rear trailing arms were checked & cleaned and joints renewed. The engine was removed & detailed as was the Engine compartment: Refinished & concourse prepped. Since the car has only been driven during the restoration work there is no racing or rally miles on the engine or drive train. It is essentially un-used since the engine & trans rebuild.
 
 
I raced all the early Porsche racing models for 40 years under the mentoring of a championship Porsche Master Mechanic Al Cadrobbi who was trained by Hermann Bream & Erhard Zedelmayer who later was (Manager of the Hahn dealerships in Germany ). I learned all the procedures mentioned above that must be done to any Porsches that sits for years as a beauty Queen.
 
 
We repainted 561 after finding that the doors needed repair along their lower seems. Though well over 60% the car was still original paint I was advised by Louis of McClusky’s to let him repaint 561 to bring back the original patina. I had my master painter Dave DiMaria meet with Louis on all details. It was painted in the same paint as the original in Grand Prix White at McClusky’shop.
 
 
(McClusky has painted Joe Caviglarie’s 911 restorations as well as some of the Singer $500K 911’s and many of the famous 289 & 427 Cobras for Carol Shelby. )Cost $40,000 (Very reasonable)
 
 
The original 7”s and 8”s wheels were treated as original and all the black anodized trim were re-anodized by the same vendor as Singer & McClusky uses. The blue color matching lettering decals were also done by Singer’s vendors since Porsche’s are not the correct original color blue as sold today.
 
 
Enterior: In 1975 the then highly desirable 3.0 Recaro RS racing seats with wool Knightwatch inserts were added. The seats are perfect today after their slight repair. Interior: The (2) vinyl door panels were from a 1976 model & incorrect when I bought 561 so I had the doors reupholstered with NOS correct blueblack pig skin pattern material special only to the Euro Carrera MFI.
 
 
Tony’s Autobaun, the US specialist for Euro MFI interiors also re-did the special 74 MFI blue/black light weight fragile carpet. Though corrected otherwise the interior is original including the headliner.
 
 
There is a Momo 911 R typo steering wheel on the car now. The like new & original steering wheel is supplied with the car’s purchase.
 
 
All instruments were also made correct, rebuilt & calibrated for the MFI.
 
 
The entire exhaust system is new and Ceramic coated in the correct Porsche Gray using a NOS logo’d original muffler and a stainless steel hi pro SSi ceramic coated Porsche gray primary performance exhaust which gives (10-12 hp over the poorly designed NLA original. Note : This exhaust system can be whipped down clean & ready for show after heavy use and exposure to oil & severe heat.
 
 
The simple modification of the rear deck above the bumper area was done by Jim Rinker to look like the popular Singer rear modification found on all his $500K + series cars. This modification can be easily reversed in 4 hours by you or us using an original rare rear NLA “Porsche” reflector that is provided. Also along with the car there is the following : English Drivers manual , Porsche Media center manual ,original jack, rare road kit, tool case kit , German electric tire pump (Not original) & the original tools have been restored to their original finishes.
 
 
Porsche Air conditioning specialist D & S air of Costa Mesa that specializes in making the poor early Porsche AC System that now works to give current Porsche air conditioning performance at a cost of $8,500 to $9,500 with out changing the original appearance. It is amazing as it can be adjusted to “too cold”.
 
 
The original & extremely rare 74 Porsche German legal special air conditioning “whaletail “ is also provided. It had to be used for registration in Germany. (It is no longer required by German DOT law). The “duck tail”fitted to the car now is the original type with the correct fiberglass rapped Aluminum frame. It also fits nicely as does the original special whale tail.
 
 
For comfort during a long Vintage rally 561 has a Porsche VINTAGE Media Center Radio installed by La Jolla Audio featuring (1)NOS dash speaker (2) 6”door & 8”JBL/Cobra under the seats speakers with out showing & but giving high quality stereo sound for the streaming XM,FM & hands free cell phone use, & navigation, cost installed $7,500 + the Porsche Radio at $2,500 Photos. Available
 
 
Asse Brothers’ of Costa Mesa are the # 1 MFI specialist & ownerJeff Erickson preformed the final rally tune and adjustment of the professionally rebuilt original 019 MFI Bosch mechanical fuel injection pump that delivers 1000/min Pulses.
 
 
561 now sits on a new set of much improved Vintage Pirelli CN36’s tires which were the original spec tire for the 74 MFI. Avons ,that are now available,makes two types of competition tires, street & track. These are highly recomended tires that would make this MFI as set up now a strong contender in the competition division of all European & Spanish “Tour Auto” type events. They are known to give an additional 2 Sec a lap at the 2.3 mile Laguna Seca track or more on the 3.1 mile Nurburgring Oldtimer track.
 
 
561 comes with its’ original Euro Certificate of Origin and Porsche letter listing of original options. It is a MATCHING NUMBERS CAR with $20,000 of extra Custom features to make it a truly exceptionally comfortable Vintage hi-performance road rally experience.
 
 
The car comes with a folder with most of the original Bills I have incurred since 2008. Sadly I have only driven the car once for its’ intended use.
 
 
My friend Dr Klaus Raeker for my birthday present had 561 sent to Kitzbuhle from his museum by rail so we could practice the famous hill climb courses using the original engine before its’ rebuild.
 
 
It was on a beautiful Sat morning that Klaus’s & I practiced just outside of Kitzbuhle, Austria. I was scheduled to run my 901 a few months later at the Ginsberg Hill climb. I must say the memory of the sounds and performance of 561 that Sat morning makes the whole MFI procession worthwhile. 561 was one of the most linear accelerating vintage race cars I have ever driven ,“561 was aways ready for the next gear change”.
 
 
According to the Porsche’s data the 74 Carrera MFI 2.7 is a much better track driving experience than a 75 turbo & will out perform the 3.0 1975/6 Turbo up to 165 mph & after then it is less than a car length difference.Ref. The Snodgrass Book hp & torque chart of both cars. If you own a 73 RS you will probably never enjoy it as intended but with this MFI you will
experience all that it can be. It is as you know a good investment and is now on the rise & few collectors know how few are left. The register for the 73 RS has more cars than were built ?
 
 
At the RM auction of Aug 23 at Monterey, Ca a low millage Grand Prix White 74 Carrera MFI sold for $435,000 plus Commission with a bid range of $250-350K. Though it had a lower mileage this car will need most of the work 561 has needed to be reliable, safe and enjoyable.
 
 
561 IS READY TO WIN A CONCOURS and/or START A cup RACE & WIN WITH A GOOD DRIVER! A rare combination. The new reduced price is $ 350,000 one finds some thing wrong after seeing the car I will consider a lower offer. But remember there is a buffer as over others comparable examples they don’t have ia new $30,000 engine & trans,a new up graded air conditioner at $9,000 & a new vintage state of the art media system at $7,000 a total of $46,000 in extras plus all existing systems are NOS. It’s a. New 74 MFI.
