The Audi S6 avant or saloon capable of a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 6.7 seconds and a top speed of 146 mph.

Of course, there’s always interest in more power, so a 4.2-liter V8 was available for original S4s in the European markets. The V8 option created an additional 60 hp, bringing performance up to 290 hp. Of course, as with all S models, both the 2.2-liter and 4.2-liter were fitted with Audi quattro four-wheel-drive.

The second generation of the A6 came around in 1999, when it officially become recognized as the Audi S6 quattro. Both the saloon and avant body styles were available in European markets, while the North American market only had the option of the avant. The 2.2-liter inline-five engine option was eliminated, leaving only the 4.2-liter V8. However, it had been reconfigured from its previous design, and the difference is visible in the numbers. 0-60 mph accelerations took 5.7 seconds, and the top speed was increased to 155.3 mph.

The third generation was produced until 2003, when the third generation, and with it, the Audi S6 V10 option, a 5.2-liter behemoth, was introduced. Performance increased to 435 hp and 398 lb-ft from the previous generation with the increase in engine size, allowing the S6 Saloon to complete a 0-60 mph acceleration in 5.2 seconds.

The most recent generation was first introduced in 2012, and the most recent models in Audi’s largest midsize performance sedan see a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 under the hood. With 450 hp and 406 lb-ft, 0-60 mph is easy in 4.3 seconds and a limited top speed stops you at 155 mph.

Audi's most sensible performance sedan rolls into 2017 with 450 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque and Quattro AWD. The twin-turbo V8 uses cylinder deactivation and variable cam timing to achieve 27 mpg on the highway. Making use of high-strength steel in the aluminum unibody along with 10 airbags, the S6 offers more safety than other sedans in this class. Taking influences from the E-tron, interior and exterior lighting is now all LED. Active noise cancellation and magnetic motor mounts make the S6 library quiet; while optional Bang & Olufsen audio delivers 1,300 watts through 15 speakers.

The system was tuned to deliver studio quality at the top speed of 155 mph. Dynamic steering has the ability to change its ratio mid-corner while the active rear differential keeps your tail planted. Adaptive air suspension adjusts for changes in the road surface while the 18-way front seats massage your back. The accelerator is still Audi's secret weapon. When it reaches the carpet it opens the exhaust to spool the turbos as the suspension, steering and differential prepare for imminent launch. All this luxury is capable of reaching 60 mph in only 4.4 seconds, matching prestige with power.
