*1996 Land Rover Defender 110 King Defender*In 1983 Land Rover debuted their new Defender, based on the earlier Series Land Rovers, it was their updated answer to the Willys Jeep based trucks they had been building since the 1940s but with more of an eye to creature comforts. This was no small task as it also needed to maintain the serious off road credentials that Land Rover had become so well known for. With the introduction of items such as coil springs, an updated interior, progressively more powerful engines and in 1984, roll up windows, the Defender became the automatic choice for outdoor adventurers and English farmers alike.As with many cars that become cult classics, the enthusiast community for the Defender is massive and a large-scale industry has sprouted up with the sole intention of improving on the trucks with modern accessories. This 1996 Defender 110 is a perfect example of someone who went all out with the updates and has made a very special one of a kind vehicle. Built by King Defender in Spokane Washington, this Guinness Edition'' Defender 110 is a full custom build that has seen less than 500 miles of use since its completion in 2023. Finished in Black Copper, this Defender underwent a nut and bolt restoration, where it received numerous updates without changing the original feel of the truck. A set of 16 gloss black wheels off of a later model Defender have been fitted and are wrapped in knobby BF-Goodrich K02 tires, and black steel bumpers have been installed both front and rear.The interior is a beautiful combination of cream leatherette, paired with high quality black carpets and black piping on everything. One thing that is unique about this Defender build is the sport bucket seats installed both up front and in the second row, which are both paired with custom center consoles. More often than not, these cars are set up with a second row bench, so this adds some comfort for the passengers, and gives them a place to store things between their seats. In the rear, two fold down benches have been upholstered to match and mean that this Defender is spacious enough for 8 passengers. Many of the electronics have been upgraded on the inside and this car is fitted with a back up camera, Pioneer sound system, LED Lighting and power windows.Powering this rig is the original 2.5 liter turbo diesel inline 5 known as the 300TDi which is legendary for its reliability. Rated at 111 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, this engine has plenty of power to cruise at highway speeds and the 5-speed manual gearbox makes extracting the performance more fun. The suspension has been upgraded as well with a front steering stabilizer, track bar and sway bars both front and rear which help this Defender feel far more stable on the highway.The Land Rover Defender is a perfect blank canvas to modify and upgrade, however best fits your wants and needs. *1996 Land Rover Defender 110*Â The Land Rover Defender is easily one of the most famous off-road vehicles of all time thanks to its extensive use on farms and estates all over Europe and Africa. Although we got Defenders stateside for a few years in the 1990s, they are now importable and many companies have sprung up to modify and improve them, offering uprated suspension, engines and interior appointments, to make them as enjoyable on-road as they are off road. This 1996 Land Rover Defender is a 110 model- denoting the longer, wagon bodystyle and is finished in the Audi color of Nardo Gray. In addition to numerous exterior modifications, this car benefits from an updated interior, and Chevrolet LS V8 up front, meaning that it is not just a more enjoyable place to spend time, but it will easily keep up with the flow of traffic.Â The Gray paint from Audi is a perfect addition to this truck, especially when paired to the other upgrades carried out on the exterior. Land Rover upfitters Terrafirma supplied the heavy duty front bumper, which is fitted with a 12,000 winch with a remote to help pull you up the steepest of inclines. A Voyager roof rack has been installed with a rear ladder and Hella Rallye 4000LED Lights are installed on the roof. In the rear, a swing away tire mount with matching spare has been fitted and an APR Fold out awning gives you shade to hang out under while off roading in the summer heat. A Mantex snorkel has been fitted up front to increase the wading depth of the truck and 16-inch EvoCorse wheels with 35-inch Nitto Grappler tires increase the ground clearance- along with a 2-inch suspension lift.Â On the inside, Recaro seats have been installed up front that feature black leather outers and houndstooth cloth upholstered centers. The rear bench is by Carrera and has been upholstered to match the front seats. A 3-spoke leather wrapped Momo steering wheel feels great in your hands and a Jensen multimedia touchscreen stereo paired with Morel speakers offers modern capabilities on the music-front. Although the Defender was a rather spartan car from the factory, this one is a really nice place to be inside, and things we have come to expect like power door locks have also been added.Â One aspect of the Defender that was typically a letdown was the engine- although the small torquey diesel powerplants were adequate, performance wasnât really in the conversation. To get around that on this truck, a 5.3-liter Chevrolet LS V8 was installed which provides over 300 horsepower as well as fuel injection, electronic ignition and easy parts availability anywhere in the United States. Hooker headers, a Ron Davis aluminum radiator with electric cooling fans and a FuelTech fuel pump with fuel pressure regulator have also been installed to keep the truck running reliably. This is paired to a 6-speed automatic gearbox with overdrive, which sends power through a 2-speed Ashcroft transfer case to all four wheels. 4- wheel disc brakes from Terrafirma have been installed, and their shocks and springs with remote reservoirs have been fitted as well. These not only offer 2 inches of additional ground clearance but give the truck a far nicer ride and improve handling on the road.Â The vintage off roading scene has been growing rapidly over the last few years and with that, Defender values have been on the rise. Not only are they great to look at, but they are a blast to drive with true go-anywhere capabilities and enough room for the whole family.
