Developed as a replacement for the F430, the 458 Italia was developed with Formula 1 racing in mind. Variations of the supercar include the retractable hard top and the Speciale. Debuted in 2011 at the Frankfurt Motor show, the convertible variation of its predecessor, this Ferrari 458 Spider for sale, was produced from 2011 to 2015 and was the first of its kind to bring together the mid-rear engine and the retractable hardtop. When creating the open top, a sports car that brought together performance, superior comfort, technology, and design.

The open top roadster is a true vision of Formula 1 racing, offering a 0-60 mph time of 3.0 seconds and a top speed of 199 mph. The car includes the Italia’s naturally aspirated 4.5-liter V8 engine that boasts 562 horsepower and a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. Thanks to an aerodynamic design and special attention paid to the retractable roof’s placement when retracted, the Italian exotic handles well on the straightaway and in the turns.

The retractable hardtop is made of aluminum. This was chosen aluminum over the traditional canvas soft top because the aluminum came in at a weight 55 lbs lighter than the canvas roof. The retractable aluminum top only takes 14 seconds to open up completely. The retractable hard-top not only functions better overall, but the aluminum build helps ensure superior performance when the top is up while systematically providing insulation to the vehicle as well.

This convertible car won nine awards in total, the most notable of which was the “Best Cabrio” presented by Motor Press Iberica and the “2012 Best of the Best Convertible”. A total of 1,500-2,000 examples each year.

It flips, folds, and falls into place. The lid on this Italian exotic is just another way the Italian exotic captivates. The mechanism works for the goal of exciting driving, keeping the folded roof from intruding into the rear engine compartment while weighing 55 fewer pounds than a traditional soft-top. This keeps weight down to 3,400 pounds on the aluminum-bodied exotic car and helps it perform much like the coupé. For instance, the 0–60 time of 3.4 seconds and a top speed of 199 mph are only a smidge behind that of the hardtop. But the coupé doesn’t offer clear access to the car's exhaust, a hearty mix of engine notes that will keep you reaching for the redline. There were mentions an electric wind stop to allow for normal conversations, but who’s talking when you have this mechanical aria? The high-revving V-8 features direct fuel injection and a flat-plane crankshaft, pumping out 557 horsepower until the little flaps in the front intakes fold flat, then it rises up to its full 562. It boasts Pininfarina’s aerodynamically sculpted lines, another one of its enchanting features.

Unsurprisingly, the open top roadster remains unchanged going into 2015. Why fix something that isn’t broken, so the 562 horsepower 4.5-liter V-8 remains wrapped in arguably one of the best looking convertibles on the market. What is surprising, though, is that this means the 458 family is a year past the usual model cycle. The extra year of life could mean that the Italians is cooking up a replacement, which looks set to debut later in 2015. There hasn’t been confirmation of the rumors, but with a certain rival British supercar company now producing a 650-horsepower open top, the rebuttal is expected sooner rather than later. With the California recently gaining a turbo, a similar approach might be taken with the 458’s replacement. To hold us over, a Speciale version of the Spider seems like the next logical choice. We would love to see a 597 horsepower convertible track monster take on the upcoming Huracán Spyder. Competition breeds innovation, and the future is looking bright in Maranello.
