Given Portsmouth, New Hampshire's nautical tradition, impeccably preserved architecture and mixture of small-town feel and upscale culture, it's no wonder that the National Trust for Historic Preservation named the city one of its "Dozen Distinctive Destinations."

Today's Portsmouth is quaint but classy, just 45 minutes from Boston, Portland, Maine, and Manchester, New Hampshire. Portsmouth has a busy summer tourist season, but is also a year-round city. "It's very much a walking town," says Martha Baroody, a real estate specialist for Paul McInnis, Inc., a local real estate company serving the greater seacoast for almost 30 years. "There are restaurants and bars on the waterfront; the tugboats and ships that navigate through the river are truly amazing. You can sit near the water and look out across the Piscataqua River and there's Maine. It's a very lively waterfront."
