Bentley is a British marquee that has been designing luxury automobiles and touring
cars since 1919. Bentley was a lone car company until the Great Depressions hit.
Demand for expensive automobiles dropped and Bentley was bought by Rolls-Royce soon
after. Rolls-Royce and Bentley shared a lot and thus their model line-ups were very
similar. However, Bentley started to grow into the sporty brand of the two in the
late 80s.
Bentley and Rolls-Royce were bought by Volkswagen in 1998. Volkswagen then made
an agreement with BMW to have them produce the Rolls-Royce after 2002. This left
Volkswagen to focus on Bentley and for the first time since the Great Depression,
Rolls-Royce and Bentley weren’t basically the same cars. The new Bentley made a
splash in the market place with their Continental GT coupe. The GT coupe was a huge
success and has helped the brand make leaps in brand recognition.
