The 740 was introduced to America in 1994. The first year it came with a 4.0-liter
V-8 making 282 hp. The following year, the 4.0-liter engine was replaced with a
4.4-liter engine, but it was still called the 740. Despite the growth in engine
size, the horsepower rating stayed the same.
In 2002, with the introduction of a new BMW 7-series, the 740 was replaced by the
745. The 745 used the same 4.4-liter V-8 but reworked to make 325 hp and 330 lbs.-ft.
of torque. The 745 stayed in production until it was replaced by the 750 in 2006.
The small letters next to the numerals may seem confusing. For the most part, these
letters have been consistent since the beginning of BMW time. Here is a list of
some of the letters and their meanings:
i = fuel-injected (this has become pretty much standard)
x = all-wheel drive
L = long-wheel base
C = coupe
T = touring wagon
s = sport package
d = diesel
