Looking for a new or used Audi TT cars for sale? Development
of the Audi TT began in 1994. By 1995, the Audi TT was first shown at the Frankfurt
Auto Show, to much fanfare. Despite its mid-90s introduction, the Audi TT for sale
was not available until 1999. What made the Audi TT popular at first was its looks.
The Audi TT coupe was simply stunning. The interior was considered award winning
and the seamless curves of the TT’s body immediately caught people’s eyes.
The Audi TT was originally available with a 1.8-liter I-4 turbocharged to 180 horsepower
or an optional 225 horsepower. The TT came in both all-wheel drive and front wheel
drive format. In 2003, Audi introduced a VR6 engine producing 250 horsepower and
coupled to the first production dual-clutch transmission. The dual-clutch tranismission
was important due to its downshifts that felt like it was mentally executed as well
as shift times that were dramatically shorter. Available as a coupe or convertible,
the Audi TT is more of a grand tourer than an actual sports car. The car weighs
more than it probably should, especially earlier versions of the car. This makes
the car perfect for many, but only adequate for enthusiasts or extreme speed junkies.
The original TT was also considered kind of twitchy at higher speeds and displayed
some handling characteristics that were very unsafe in unexperienced hands. The
twitchy behavior gained some notoriety in Europe. The press were all over the crashes
and related fatalities at speeds in excess of 110 mph during abrupt lane changes
and sharp turns. A recall in late 1999 and early 2000 helped improve predictability
of the car’s handling characteristics at very high speeds in both the coupe and
roadster. Audi added an electronic stability program, rear spoiler, as well as some
suspension modifications.
The second generation Audi TT was introduced in 2006. The new TT gained a more grown-up
look over the original TT. It, again, was available in front or all-wheel drive.
The car either came with a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 with 200 horsepower or a 3.2-liter
V-6 developing 250 horsepower. Like the 50th-anniversary Corvette, the Audi TT became
available with a Magnetic-Ride suspension, which adjusts its softness depending
on road conditions.
The TT was nominated for the North American Car of the Year award for 2000. It was
also on Car and Driver magazine's Ten Best List for 2000 and 2001. The second
generation TT has been honored with many awards including Top Gear's Coupe
of the Year 2006, as well as being a finalist for World Car of the Year.
