Looking for a Audi A6 for sale? Or are you interested in
the hi-po Audi S6 for sale? The Audi A6 and S6 originally went on sale in 1994,
when the new nomenclature for the brand went into effect. The Audi S6 for sale is
a high-performance version of the Audi A6 mid-sized sedan. The A6 replaced the 100
sedan. All Audi A6 cars come with all-wheel drive. The Audi RS6 pushed the performance
envelope even further than the S6 and has been available since 2002.
The first A6 was a mild revision of the 100 sedan. It came standard with a rather
lethargic 172-hp V-6. The cabin was a friendly place to reside and the optional
all-wheel drive helped those people that live in snowy climates.
The first S6 was powered by a 2.2L turbo I-5 that produced 227 horsepower from the
same engine that could also be found in the S4. Just like the S4, the S6 was available
with a 4.2L V-8 in Europe
The next A6 in 1998 came with a little bit more muscle under the hood. The 200-hp
2.8-liter V-6 was decent; however, Audi quickly added the twin-turbo 2.7-liter V-6
with 250 hp in 2000 to meet more people’s power needs. The top-of-the-line option
was the 4.2-liter 300-hp V-8. Despite producing an extra 50 hp and feeling both
faster and smoother, the 4.2-liter was actually a bit slower than the 2.7T. Zero-to-60
mph required 6.7 seconds for the V-8 and only 6.0 seconds for the V-6.
The second-generation S6 lasted from 1998 to 2003 and had a 4.2L V-8 underneath
its hood. Unfortunately, the car came only in Avant (wagon) format. Despite the
extra pounds added on by the elongated body, the wagon had nimble handling and decent
performance.
The next A6 copied the styling and behavior of its older brother, the A8. It came
standard with a 255-hp V-6 but was also available with a 335-hp V-8, which was later
bumped up to 350 hp in 2007. At 4,000 pounds, either engine is slowed by a little
bit of weight, but the V-8 seems to handle it better. A new Continuously Variable
Transmission (CVT) became available when the car debuted in 2005, although a normal
six-speed automatic was standard.
The third generation S6 came out with a stellar 5.2L V-10—burrowed from the Lamborghini
Gallardo—making a whopping 435 hp.Despite the move towards a more powerful and performance-oriented
ride, the S6 stills suffered when compared to the BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz E63.
The first generation RS6 came out in 2002 with a twin-turbocharged 4.2L V-8 making
450 hp. After a brief hiatus, the second generation RS6 came out in 2008. This RS6
had the 5.0-liter V-10 but with twin turbochargers to shove the output up to an
amazing 573 horsepower.
