Aston Martin is a British brand that specializes in luxury and performance-oriented
exotic cars. The company was named after the founder Lionel Martin and the Aston
Hill Hillclimbing Race. (A hillclimbing race is where drivers compete against the
clock on an uphill course)
The company began life in 1913 but it wasn’t until the 1950s that Aston Martin started
to really make some beautiful and renowned cars. It was the DB series that really
put Aston Martin in the company of such makers as Ferrari and Lamborghini. The Aston
Martin name was big but didn’t become a household name until the first DB Mark III
was written into a James Bond book by Author Ian Fleming. It was that book and story
that put a silver DB5 onto the big screen in the 1964 movie Goldfinger.
From 1994 to 2007, Aston Martin was owned by the Ford Motor Company. It helped make
Aston Martin cars more reliable at the cost of styling that although stunning, slowly
grew to become very similar to each other and its cousin, the Jaguar XK.
In 2007, Aston Martin was picked up by a handful of investors led by Prodrive Chairman
David Richards.
Today, the company offers a variety of automobiles that range anywhere in price
from $150,000 to over $300,000. The cars are liimited to large, high-horsepower-producing
V8 and V12 engines. As noted earlier, the cars may look a little similar but who
can really ever get too much of a good thing? From the sculpted lines to the forged
rims, Aston Matin knows how to make beautiful cars. Their current line-up includes
the Vantage coupe and roadster, DB9 and the DBS. The next Bond movie, Quantum of
Solace is expected to showcase the current flagship, the DBS. The Rapide,
a four-door vehicle with a coupe roofline, will be the first new car released after
the company was bought in 2007.
