The first time the Carrera name was used on the 911 nameplate was in what year?

It's quite fitting that 1972 and 1973 are at a dead heat with an even 30 percent of the votes each for this poll question. It's fitting because this is sort of a trick question. Porsche introduced the Carrera RS at the Paris Motor Show in 1972. The car was actually available for 1973. The first prototypes were built in April of 1972 but full production did not begin until six months later. The 2.7-liter Carrera RS was first intended as a very limited run of approximately 500 cars to allow it into Group 4 for GT Racing. The Carrera RS was such a success that by the end of 1973 more than 1,580 units had been built. The car stood out due to its larger engine, aerodynamic aids, larger wheels and fenders, and lower weight.

Prior to appearing on the 911 as a trim specification, the Carrera name was used by Porsche on the 356 Carrera.
