The BMW M-based 1-series—a car that was not expected to see the light of day until the next generation 1-series was introduced—may become a part of the BMW lineup as early as 2011. BMW has already said that it will not use the M1 nameplate for obvious reasons. We anticipate a conglomerate of terms like the BMW Z4 SDrive35is.
AutoCar is reporting that the M-based 1-series will use a twin-turbocharged I-6 making upwards of 350 hp—it makes 340 hp in the sportiest Z4 model. The best news may be the addition of BMW’s seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, which was recently introduced to its roadster and will add to the car’s driving dynamics while reducing fuel consumption and emissions. The car will likely also come with its own version of the M Sports Package, including aerodynamic upgrades and adaptive suspension featuring electronically controlled dampers. A weight-loss program, though obviously beneficial, may be skipped in order to cut costs.
With the latest M3's increase in size, weight, and price, some BMW enthusiasts think the brand has lost its direction. The 1-series could be the back-to-basics model that BMW needs to keep young driving enthusiasts' interests.
