Mercedes-Benz failed at its last attempt to introduce a low-level model to the lineup, but the C230K of the 90s was a hatchback, something that has never faired too well in the States. It, however, is now confident with the success of the BMW 1-series that America is ready for a new model to carry the C-class moniker. The Coupe should squeeze in a bit lower in price, use two doors instead of four, and see the light of day in 2011. Like the sedan, the C-class Coupe should be available with a variety of engines including the 3.0-liter V-6 making 228 hp. It will likely also retain the 3.5-liter V-6 making 268 hp as the upper-echelon engine to compete against the 300-hp 135i. An AMG version with a 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 is a strong possibility a year or two later.
