AMG is taking the reins for Mercedes-Benz, developing the brand’s first all-electric car and producing one of the first all-electric supercars from a major manufacturer—depending, of course, on when it will actually be able to bring the car to market. Compared to the gasoline-powered SLS, with its 6.3-liter V-8 making 571 hp, the SLS with electric drive should be able to perform nearly as well; taking 4.0 seconds to go from standstill to 60 mph, 0.2 seconds shy of the gas car.
Instead of a single electric motor powering one set of wheels, it has decided to utilize a single motor for each wheel, combining to produce 526 hp and 649 lbs.-ft. of torque. The motors are not mounted inside the wheel, but a little more set in, near the suspension components, to reduce unsprung weight. By using a separate power plant for each wheel, the car will better be able to handle restricting or empowering a single wheel for improved handling.
