Mercedes-Benz will be bringing back the E-Class convertible and coupe in 2010 after a 14-year hiatus. In a weird twist, the E-Class convertible/coupe will be replacing the CLK coupe/convertible, which had previously replaced the E-Class coupe/convertible in 1996. Unlike the CLK, which was based off the C-Class chassis, the new two-door E will share its underpinnings with the four-door E-Class and likely carry an assortment of E-Class engines, including the 3.5-liter V-6, 5.5-liter V-8, and a more powerful version of the AMG-built 6.3-liter V-8.
Despite the current trends in luxury convertibles, rumors are that the E-Class convertible will pay tribute to the old way of doing things. These design decisions include going with a soft top instead of a retractable hard top, traditional brakes instead of the available brake-by-wire system, and a conventional suspension set-up without the electronically-controlled active body control. Expect pricing similar to the current CLK, or around $50,000.
