At the unveiling of the Ferrari California last week, Ferrari inadvertently (though quite possibly intentionally) showed journalists a topless version of the Ferrari 430 Scuderia. The Scuderia was designed as a more race-oriented version of the 430, which begs the question why they would build a convertible? Any weight saving in the coupe will be lost with the added weight of the convertible top. Most people that race on weekends would prefer the added rigidity that a coupe offers. Don’t forget that the last two generations’ race-ready cars—the 355 Challenge and the 360 Challenge Stradale—were not offered in convertible form. Was the picture there to build publicity? Will this car be at the Paris Auto Show? Will it become a reality? We have to wait and see.
