Spyker C8 boasts 500 hp in special China model

Spyker is joining the special-edition-models-for-China game with the Spyker C8 Laviolette China Edition. Wearing bright orange paint and Dutch flag accents, the car’s 4.2-liter V-8 is said to develop 100 more horsepower for a new total of 500 (we guess the ZR1 motor was unavailable). The Chinese people will pay for the extra horsepower, literally. The car is priced at 4.8 million Yuan, or approximately $740,000.

Spyker C8 Aileron Spyder to get ZR1 V-8

Despite the Spyker C8 Aileron Spyder not meeting its 2010 production expectations, CEO Victor Muller has reportedly told a Dutch magazine that the Spyder will be going into a limited production run of 99 units in the near future. He also said that Spyker will be replacing the car’s 4.2-liter Audi-sourced 400-hp V-8 with the ZR1’s 6.2-liter supercharged V-8, which should help qualm any concerns about the car’s delayed delivery with customers.

Spyker may revive D8 Perking to Paris with help from Saab

Off and on. Like many concepts that get some great media exposure, fan craze, and customer desire, the D8 Peking to Paris (originally dubbed the D12 Peking to Paris) has had a number of will-be-available-in-20?? dates since it made its debut at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show. Despite the delays and now that the acquisition of Saab is out of the way, Spyker will focus back on bringing a SUV to the marketplace. Utilizing Saab underpinnings, Spyker calls it a SSUV, which is an acronym for Super Sports Utility Vehicle. Unfortunately, since 2006 competition has gotten down right harsh because of the X6 M, new Cayenne, ML63 AMG, and Range Rover Sport and that “Super” part might not be as fitting. The concept came with a V-12 engine (thus the D12 name) but if it does go to production it will get a V-8, most likely producing 550 hp.

A look back at duPont REGISTRY's Top 100 Cars of the Century

In 1999, the duPont REGISTRY held a survey where it asked its subscribers and the visitors to its web site to pick the 10 best cars of the century. Using those opinions, along with the picks from a number of notable persons like Mario Andretti, Don Panoz, Carroll Shelby, and Reggie Jackson, it compiled a list of the Top 100 Cars of the Century and dedicated a special book to its cause (in a way it was the precursor to our annual editorial-based Exotic Car Buyers Guide). The book hit newsstands before the turn of the century and was a great success. Today we are going to take a look back at that list and reminisce on what cars were picked and why and compare it to how those cars would probably rank exactly 10 years later.

Taking the number one spot on our top 100 list was the Lamborghini Diablo. Unveiled in production trim in Monte Carlo in January 1990, the Diablo was in its ninth year and still being produced at the time the book was written. We praised the “devil” for its “staggering 530 bhp from the…5.7-liter V-12,” and “0-60 mph acceleration under 4 seconds.” In the review we wrote “Lamborghini is rumored to be working on the next generation supercar. Though it’s hard to believe, they will create an automobile that will surpass our number one car in speed, power, and aerodynamic style.” Of course none of us knew the Lamborghini Murciélago was going to be so fast and so powerful and garnish as much admiration from the motoring public with its stout 580-hp 6.2-liter V-12 engine as it did. However, looking back, we can’t help but think that if a Lamborghini were to make the top ten list, shouldn’t it be the Lamborghini Countach? A model that has influenced the styling of all the company’s cars for the past 40 years.

Continue our look back at the top 100 cars of the last 100 years.

Spyker to sell watches to match the car's jewelry

Spyker announced that through a licensing agreement it will be able to distribute an exclusive collection of high-luxury wristwatches. Working with Expressions d’Artistes International to design, manufacture, and distribute the timepieces, the Spyker collection will consist of mechanical chronographs available in either 18-karat grey gold, 18-karat rose gold, black titanium, or steel. All of the new watches will embody the same design attributes found in the Spyker cars. To ensure exclusivity, each watch will be individually numbered; a special edition reserved for Spyker owners will be engraved with the corresponding Spyker chassis number.

“Spyker Cars represent the ultimate level of luxury, design and performance in super sports cars,” said Victor Muller, CEO of Spyker-Saab, “Being myself a longtime admirer of sophisticated mechanical watches, I have personally collaborated with the design and conception of the Spyker Timepieces.”

The official launch of Spyker Timepieces will take place during the 24 Hours of Le Mans race on June 15, where Spyker is competing. After its introduction, the Spyker Timepieces will be available at carefully selected watch jewelers around the world who specialize in high-luxury watches. Retail prices will range from €7,500 for the base steel model to €23,500 for the 18-karat gold models.

Is a Spyker-owned Saab likely to fail?

**Update**GM has reached an agreement with Spyker to purchase its Saab brand. Once the purchase is complete, Spyker plans to form a new company: Saab Spyker Automobiles. We can anticipate lots of aviation-stressed cars from the Swedish Dutch manufacturer. **Update**

***Update***GM has announced that due to a time factor, including it's original deadline to offload Saab by January 1st, the deal between it and Spyker will be aborted.

"Despite the best efforts of all involved, it has become very clear that the due diligence required to complete this transaction could not be be executed in a reasonable time, " said the president of GM Europe, Nick Reilly. ***Update***

Spyker has confirmed it has placed a bid for GM’s Saab brand after Koenigsegg pulled its offer a few weeks ago because it was taking too long to set up financing. Spyker is a niche luxury / sports car manufacturer with a rich aviation history—like Saab—that sells cars priced for more than $250,000. The Spyker car company, which produced 43 cars in 2008, has never turned a profit since going public in 2004. Its biggest year was in 2006 when it produced 94 cars. Although not confirmed, the company has likely been in the red since being resurrected in 2000.

Saab’s track record is worse; bringing in no profits in the 20 years it has been collaborating with GM except for one year: 1995. GM purchased 50% of the company in 1989 and formed a new company: Saab Automobile AB. In 2000, GM worked a deal with investors to acquire the other 50% of the company.

So, can Spyker save Saab?
